The Town of Prescott Receives My Main Street Support for RiverWalk Revival
The Town of Prescott is thrilled to announce that our Downtown Prescott RiverWalk Revival project was selected for My Main Street Community Activator support to move forward with several exciting placemaking initiatives to beautify and activate downtown public spaces; making them more livable and appealing for residents and visitors.
This project will support a number of placemaking activities throughout the Downtown Prescott RiverWalk District, including installations to reshape public engagement and usage, beautified pedestrian spaces through public art installations and greening initiatives, and a renewed wayfinding strategy to attract and retain visitors. Placemaking activities will facilitate the creation of more inclusive and vibrant downtown public spaces for our diverse residents, visitors and businesses. This will contribute to the vitality of our downtown and businesses.
Project Highlights
The RiverWalk Revival project will focus on revitalizing public spaces, with notable improvements including:
- The implementation of a new wayfinding strategy, both to aid in attracting visitors to the RiverWalk District, and to better identify businesses and attractions within the area.
- The design and installation of an interactive mural to replace concrete barriers presently used to close a former entrance to the main parking lot located in the Downtown, which also houses the Town’s Clock Tower and the main publicly-owned RiverWalk Patio, and serves as a Public Square for seasonal and summer events.
- Further efforts to better develop a sense of place in the RiverWalk District by expanding on the RiverWalk Patio program to include licensed sidewalk dining.
- The refurbishment of an extensive public garden that runs along the Canadian Coast Guard base located in the application area, which will provide a connection between the District’s east and west ends.
- Replacement of downtown traffic poles to upgrade aging infrastructure and enhance downtown aesthetics.
- Purchase additional amenities & furnishings to further enhance sites like the Pop-Ups, Promenade, and Patios.
- Construct a new river front patio with seating located at the base of Centre St. adjacent to the deep-water dock/scuba dive park, to provide an additional connection between a main attraction and the Downtown core.

Notice to Businesses about Sign Permit Requirements and Associated Design Guidelines for Downtown.
Prescott’s Downtown & RiverWalk District Sign Design Guidelines are a tool businesses can use to inform the design of meaningful, high quality signage that positively contributes to Prescott’s visual landscape and placemaking efforts. Signs located within the Downtown Core/RiverWalk District zoning area must comply with the Downtown Sign Design Guidelines and Sign By-Law #16-2019.
Signs that identify particular establishments are an important design element because they give character to public places and contribute to pedestrian scale and ambiance. Signs should be used together with other elements such as hanging baskets, flags, awnings and overhangs to suggest an overhead enclosure that emphasizes the visibility of storefronts at the pedestrian level.
All businesses are required to obtain a sign permit prior to installing new or updating existing signage.

Summer Season Sees Growth in Tourism in Prescott
2024 was a year of growth for Prescott's tourist and visitor attractions, with new additions, new and returning events, and much more filling the calendar throughout the season.
The summer attraction season kicked off with the opening of the Prescott Pop-Ups and the Prescott Farmers' and Crafters' Market on Victoria Day weekend. This year's expanded Prescott Pop-Ups included three new retail cottages, a new Food Truck, and a permanent Pop-Ups Visitor Centre. The Pop-Ups also welcomed Arbru on the River, a destination anchor and attraction drawing a new demographic to the Pop-Ups and Downtown Prescott.
June 14 to 16 brought the Eastern Ontario Firefighters Association games back to Prescott for the first time in 15 years, and along with it the first ever Prescott Trolley event. Over 500 spectators at firefighters games. The Prescott Trolley provided over 800 riders heritage tours of Prescott over the weekend.
For the first time, Prescott's Canada Day activities centred on the waterfront and Prescott's event space. Canine Watersports Canada returned for their second Make a Splash on Canada Day event in Prescott, running June 29th to July 1st. On July 1st, festivities kicked off with a Canada Day parade and an opening ceremony at Fort Wellington. Live music and family activities continued until fireworks at dark. The Prescott Pop-Ups had over 5000 visitors during the day.
On August 3rd, Downtown Prescott hosted their first sidewalk sale and downtown street festival since the Pandemic, the King Street Promenade. With the participation of over 50 businesses and community groups, the King Street Promenade featured a two block sidewalk sale, giant inflatables, live music from the Pop-Ups to George Street, street artists, and a roving magic show. The 2nd Annual King Street Promenade will be held Saturday, August 2nd, 2025.
Through the summer, returning events like the Prescott Spiritual Wellness Fair, Poutine Feast Prescott, and Canine Watersports Canada helped animate the riverfront event space throughout the summer, and plan to return in 2025.
Additionally Fort Wellington National Historic Site, one of Prescott's legacy tourist attractions, saw over 1000 visitors on Canada Day and 11,772 visitors this summer, a return to pre-COVID numbers.
The St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival returned to the Kinsmen Amphitheatre for its 22nd season, featuring Shakespeare's The Tempest and Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer as the season's featured repertory productions, as well as a special run of Play On: A Shakespeare Inspired Mixtape, created by Robert Markus and the Festival's new Co-Creative Directors, Julia Nish-Lapidus, & James Wallis. The season closed with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat, a community production featuring local talent.
Live music again filled Sundays at the waterfront, as the Summer Concert Series hosted another successful season of local and regional entertainers. On August 24th, the 5th annual Upper Canada Folkfest saw increased attendance, featuring promanent folk duo Twin Flames to close out the festival.
September 28th brought a new event to the Prescott Pop-Ups, Oktoberfest on the River hosted by Arbru on the River. Featuring the release of Arbru's new Oktoberfest beer and live music all day, the event helped close the regular Pop-Ups season. From Victoria Day Weekend through the close of the season, the Pop-Ups welcomed over 40,000 visitors, a 75% increase versus 2023.
Looking ahead, events including Halloween Town, the Pumpkin Parade (November 1st, 6 pm to 8 pm, RiverWalk Park), the Light Up the Night Parade, and RiverWalk Wonderland (December 6th & 7th, Prescott Pop-Ups) will continue to attract visitors through the shoulder season and into the holidays.
