Saint Paul's Master's Table Soup Kitchen Team Last Weekend
FOR ALL THE SAINTS
The Saints of Saint Paul’s Church
By Catherine Robertson

I sing a song of the saints of God, patient and brave and true,
Who toiled and fought and lived and died for the Lord they loved and knew.
And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, and one was a shepherdess on the green:
They were all of them saints of God—and I mean, God helping, to be one too.
John Henry Hopkins, 1940

For more than 270 years, innumerable saints of God have worshipped within the walls of Saint Paul’s Church. Over that time, the church buildings have been damaged and destroyed by war, flood, and fire, but the spirit of Saint Paul’s has stood strong. The congregations have been, and continue to be led to Christ by a multitude of clergy who have dedicated their lives to spreading the Word of the Gospel, ministering to the needs of the people through life’s struggles, and celebrating the joys of fellowship in God.

Also important in the history of Saint Paul’s are the many lay members who have contributed to the mission of spreading Christ’s word, by working tirelessly in service to the church, as well as to the surrounding community. Though there have been thousands of saints who have trod these grounds, here are but a few who have stood out over time.

Mitchell Hampton Tyler
(1909-1992)

For more than 50 years, Mitchell Tyler was a cornerstone of Saint Paul’s Church. People who knew him would say that is quite an understatement. He was the embodiment of good Christian character, warm congeniality, and gentle kindness, wrapped up in one small man with a big smile and infectious laugh. On entering the parish hall, the children ran to greet him wherever he might be working. Adults also never failed to greet him with a warm handshake, until in later years when his hands were wracked with arthritis. Rectors came, and rectors went, but Mitchell Tyler’s presence was constant.

As a lifetime Episcopalian and member of Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church, Mitchell knew and put into practice the rituals of the church on a daily basis. It was not unusual to see him genuflecting before the cross while mopping the chancel! In the care of the church, Mitchell did it all, from keeping the church spotless and shining the brass to setting up for events and washing every dish, to the care of the churchyard and mowing the graveyard, smiling all the while. From an early age, he loved Saint Paul’s Church.
Mitchell Hampton Tyler was born in Georgia in 1909. By the time he was 20, he was married to Georgia Lee Davenport, and they were the parents of their only child, Milton.  For several years in his early adulthood, he worked at the shoe repair shop of James Child located on 9th Street. By 1941, he was the full-time sexton of the church, but according to oral tradition, he had been helping his predecessor Jeff for several years before that. Mitchell’s wife Georgia could often be found in

the kitchen helping Mitchell during special events, and for many years, she kept small children in the nursery. In later years, as Mitchell began to slow down, he could be found resting between tasks in his recliner chair in his special corner of the church. Mitchell retired from his full-time position in the late 1980’s, but remained to “break in” his replacement. He died in 1992, but the smell of his pipe in the boiler room lingered long after he was gone.
After the renovation of the parish hall, it was named “Tyler Hall” to the glory of God, and in honor of the man who was loved beyond measure by the people of Saint Paul’s.
2023 STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN
Our 2023 Annual Stewardship Campaign is underway. As the month comes to a close, we'll hear our last personal reflection this Sunday from Ellen Nesbitt.

The mailing of pledge cards has been delayed, and will be completed next week. We are asking all Saint Paul’s households to complete and return a pledge card online or by mail, and to please consider an increase over last year. If pledging has not been your practice, we encourage you to join this year’s campaign.

Next Sunday, join us in the Berlin Room at 9:30 AM for a conversation with the Vestry on year-round stewardship.

You may also print a pledge card or complete the online pledge card available on our website at saintpauls.org or by using the direct links below.

Creation Care Committee

Kick-Off Meeting
Wednesday, November 2, 6:30 PM, Berlin Room

When Martin Luther King, Jr., said “I refuse to accept the idea that man is mere flotsam and jetsam in the river of life, unable to influence the unfolding events which surround him,” he wasn’t speaking about climate change, but could have been. At times, it may seem that taking care of the environment is an overwhelming task, that there is not much we can do. I take encouragement from Dr. King’s words.

As God’s children, we are called to make the Earth a better and cleaner place. You don’t have to be an activist to get started—but you can be! There is a place on our Creation Care Committee for everyone, whether you want to lead a project you’re passionate about, volunteer to help out at an event or something in between. Recycling, energy efficiency, air quality, habitat preservation and education are but a few of the areas we can focus on, but the possibilities are endless. And the more people who take part will only make the experience more vibrant.

I hope you’ll join me on November 2 in the Berlin Room to discuss how we can tailor a role to your talents. I look forward to sharing a meal or just sharing our thoughts. All ages and ideas are welcome!

Jennifer McKee, Chair, Saint Paul’s Creation Care Committee

Women of the Bible Formation series, led by Rabbi Shai Beloosesky from the Reform Congregation Children of Israel (CCI), returns in October for 3 Sundays. These sessions will focus on stories in the Torah from the women's perspective and examine the influence of women in the narrative that is often minimized because of the preponderance of male writers in the World’s Great Religious texts: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Discussion will focus on the interpretation of the text and the meanings ascribed by contemporary thinkers.

As we continue sharing a meal, three biblical lessons are read by aloud by members of the group, followed by a reflection from Brian McLaren’s We Make the Road by Walking. We conclude our time together engaging with the reflection. Much of the work of the Holy Spirit in formation is in forming relationship. As the title suggests we make the road by walking together. We invite you to join this small group as your schedule allows.

You may bring your own lunch or share in the meal provided. A lunch RSVP is requested by midnight Tuesday: online or by email to Elisabeth Price, and donations are requested to cover the cost of lunch each week.

Walk for Water
November 12, 2022, 9 AM
CSRA Walk for Water returns this year and once again Saint Paul's is the midway point of the walk. We're excited to support this event and invite you to join this important work. More information can be found on our website here.

The Walk for Water puts a creative twist on the typical “fundraising walk.” On the morning of Saturday, November 12, we expect a thousand people to walk, carrying empty pails, from the SRP Park baseball field in North Augusta to Saint Paul’s parking lot by the River Walk, where they will fill their buckets and begin the return trek along the river. This walk connects us with the trek billions make every single day to carry home untreated water for basic subsistence.

You can support this event by joining our walking team, volunteering to serve as hospitality at Saint Paul's, or giving to our team. For more information contact Elisabeth Price.
