Nature Abounds
2200 Thursday, July 21

I have always loved sailing for the places it takes me and the variety of nature both in the sea and on the land that I have been introduced to. With that in mind, Annie and I set out this morning with a goal of seeking nature and the amazing wildlife of Newfoundland. The jaunt took us on a hike through a vast nature preserve, spotting Woodland Caribou, an Arctic Fox, Canada Geese and moist bogs with the carnivorous, deep red Pitcher Plant that attracts insects into its liquid filled chamber to trap and devour them. (The Pitcher Plant is the Provincial Flower of Newfoundland.) Following the inland hike we headed for the stunning beauty of Cape St. Mary's at the southern end of the Avalon Peninsula. Here, over 100,000 Northern Gannets gather to lay eggs and raise their young. I happily captured another shot of a gannet in flight as well as a newly hatched, fluffy chick with open beak in the nest. As much as we are dazzled by the beauty of these wonders, we are also reminded that the Newfoundland Wolf, Labrador Duck and the Great Auk, all native to Newfoundland, were brought to extinction with European settlement of these lands. I hope you enjoy the photos below.
