Call for Candidates for FIPPOA Elections, Long-term Community Planning Task Force Membership, & More

Dear Karen,

FIPPOA and the Pines Foundation are seeking interested candidates for its Board of Directors

The FIPPOA and Pines Foundation Board of Directors consists of fifteen dedicated, hardworking community volunteers who are individually and collectively committed to working on delivering our many contributions to the Pines community.

Directors are elected every year at the Fall Community Meeting, scheduled this year for September 17th, to serve a four-year term, and each year there are anywhere from three to four positions up for (re)-election. Candidates must be regular members of FIPPOA.

Every two years, and including this year, we will also elect our Executive Officers – President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer – for two-year terms. Executive Officers must be one of the fifteen members elected to serve on the board.

I have asked Claudia Tropp to act as this year’s Nominations Chair. Claudia, and her partner Jim, have been homeowners and FIPPOA members for the last two years. Claudia served on FIPPOA’s Internet Task Force and was one of the members instrumental in delivering FIOS to the Pines.

If you are interested in exploring a run this year, I encourage you to reach out to Claudia at Claudiaceleste@yahoo.com. Claudia can answer questions and guide you through the process. And of course, I am also available to explore your interest at any time.

Representation on the board is a serious commitment, and I am honored by and deeply appreciative to all who serve and who are interested in stepping up to do so in the future.

Claudia will present a slate of candidates to the FIPPOA board at our July 9th monthly meeting, so you must express your interest to be on the ballot to Claudia prior to Friday, July 8th.

Composition of Long-term Community Planning Task Forces

In several prior newsletters and at both last year’s Fall and this year’s Spring Community Meetings, I have shared with the community the launch, progress, and results of the Long-term Community Planning project initiated last Fall.

I had the pleasure over the past six weeks of talking and meeting with over 20 interested community members in serving on the three new Task Forces that are being established to address the most pressing concerns and opportunities that arose from the planning. They came to me voluntarily, through suggestion from the consultant who conducted the community focus groups, and some I contacted myself. I appreciate all who expressed interest.

Together with my participation on each Task Force, the membership is as follows:

Environmental Stewardship Task Force

Chris Carolan

Gary Korr

John Krawchuk

Steve McGee

Task Force on Infrastructure and Services

Bill Hildebrandt

Leland Rechis

Ed Schulhafer

Claudia Tropp

Task Force on Mitigating the Impact of Climate Change on the Pines

Gabe Brotman

Harry Hayes

Mark McElreath

Bob McGarity

The Task Forces will begin meeting late June/early July, at first, to affirm their mission and scope of work. I will keep the community informed of progress via this newsletter and at our community meetings.

Mosquito Spraying

Suffolk County will resume spraying intended to control the mosquito population on Thursday, June 30th from approximately 5:30 – 10PM. All boardwalks in the Pines will be covered. For more information on Suffolk County's mosquito control program, please check out their website.

U.S. Monkeypox Outbreaks

A recent outbreak of monkeypox in Europe and the U.S. (including New York) has been reported principally, but not exclusively, amongst men who have sex with men (MSM). Transmission has been linked to raves, saunas, sexual activity, and close intimate contact through MSM sex networks and sex parties.

The outbreak has not been linked to casual contact or respiratory routes. The CDC has provided this preliminary guidance. Because the number of cases in the US are low thus far, medical professionals do not yet understand some aspects of the outbreak, so we can expect the guidance to evolve with time. This information is provided so you can make informed and responsible decisions to protect your health.

Wagon Rack -

Starting on June 21st, all wagons without 2022 FIPPOA wagon rack stickers will be removed and stored at Whyte Hall. If you haven't joined FIPPOA yet, please click here to sign-up. If you are a member of FIPPOA, and have not received your sticker yet, please stop by the FIPPOA office at Whyte Hall between 10AM and 3PM. Please call ahead as staff members may be out in the community. The FIPPOA office number is 631-597-6060.

Congratulations to those who organized the Tag Sale on Saturday! It was great to see this fun tradition brought back to the Pines!
