MONDAY MEMO
1st graders Vivian, Emily, Hannah, Riley, and Eugene practiced their sight words in a game with Monica last week.
Hello {First Name},

Here's to April! May more signs of spring be apparent to us soon!

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
SEED SALE
Congratulations to the Preschool class for selling the most seeds on the High Mowing Seedling sale! They will celebrate with a pizza or ice cream party soon! In a very close 2nd and 3rd place, the Kindergarten and 1st graders will have some seeds to plant in a spring garden. Thank you to all families that supported the parents' efforts through this fundraiser. Happy planting!
SELF STUDY FOR ACCREDITATION UPDATE
After almost two years, the work of all of our self study committees is now complete. We are extremely grateful for the teachers, parents, trustees, and friends who served on these committees to reflect on our strengths and challenges on a variety of topics (governance, mission, student supports, professional development, long term viability, and more). If you'd like to read a summary of the major themes of our findings, you can find it here.

The reports are now being shared with a team of peer educators and administrators from other small schools in northern New England. They will read them and reflect on them when they visit Riverside: Monday, May 1 - Wednesday May 3. The purpose of their visit will be to learn about Riverside in practice, and validate our self study work from their objective perspective.
REENROLLMENT CONTRACTS
The state is several weeks behind on releasing the announced average tuition. We cannot send out re-enrollment contracts for returning families until we know the state's average and have set our own tuition rates, so contracts will be late this year. We will have them in the mail as soon as the board votes on tuition rates for 2023-2024. Usually, we ask families to return their contracts within three weeks. Because of our lengthy waitlist of applicants, we will have to so shorten that timeline to two weeks, so that we can make the other admissions decisions. If you know already that you may not be enrolling your children next year, it would help us tremendously to know this now. Please email Roy and Krystal.
2023-2024 CALENDAR
Here is our DRAFT of next year's calendar. Note that we are returning to a start date before labor day.
TEACHING CANDIDATES
We welcome parents to meet two more teaching candidates today at 2:15 in the dining room (Deandra's intervention space behind Krystal's office). Will Albritton is applying for the middle school position and Carrie Albritton for the 2nd grade position. They have travelled from Florida to the NEK for a few days and might like to hear from others about what life is like in this little corner of the world!
SCHOOL CHOICE LEGISLATION UPDATE
H.483 passed in the House of Representatives last week, and now goes to the Senate. Thanks to your excellent communications with our representatives, and their hard work on our behalf, this bill is a much better option for us than the initial bill (S.66), which would have ended school choice at the K-8 level. Having said that, this bill still contains some new guidelines that will have a significant impact on how we operate. We have an internal committee working on how we can navigate these changes. It may be the case that this bill is the best we can hope for, and while making things more difficult for us as a school, it may be the best option for preserving school choice in what is clearly a hostile environment for independent schools in the State House. We will continue to communicate with our representatives and lobbying organizations and will let you know what the next steps will be in reaching out to legislators. Thanks so much for all of your effort in this matter- our representatives unanimously commented on how engaged our school community was in the process.
K-2nd gr. SWIMMING
Please remember to pick up K-2nd graders at the back door of the SJA pool at 3:30 this Thursday, and again on April 13, 20, May 4, and 11.

If you have to pick up a middle school student at Riverside as well, siblings can stay in the EDP at no charge until 3:45.
RIVERSIDE SUPER RAFFLE
Parents, please think through your own resources and connections! Who do you know who has talents, business, or connections, and could donate an item or service as a raffle prize?
  • products from local businesses? (check with Krystal to be sure they haven't already been asked)
  • gift certificates for experiences, meals, or services?
  • hand crafted items or artwork?
  • time shares or airline miles?
  • unopened/undesired gifts?
  • hours of babysitting from your older child?
  • an event hosted at your home?

How are ticket sales going? Remember that we need all tickets returned (contact info half if sold, whole if unsold) by April 17.

2nd ANNUAL RIVERSIDE AGAINST CANCER RECESS RELAY
In honor of all cancer fighters, survivors, and caregivers, students at the Riverside School are hosting a walkathon to benefit the American Cancer Society. We’ve all been impacted by this monstrous disease and through this event, we wish to offer support, inspiration and hope. We want to bring the whole Riverside community together with one common goal, to join in the fight for a cure. This year’s theme is Superheroes. As Allee says, "Little kids can do Big things." We need more Superheroes. Please mark your calendars and take the afternoon of Friday, May 26th off from work to join us on the soccer field. Our focus is on the health benefits of physical activity, sun safety, the dangers of tobacco use, and the importance of making healthy nutritional choices. Stay tuned for event specifics, fundraising information and ways to get involved. Contact Caroline with any questions.
CLUBS THIS WEEK AND NEXT:
  • 6-8 Mathcounts Club will meet for the last time today. On behalf of all the students in the Mathcounts club, we would like to thank Cecelia and Alex Garvin (Julian and Beatrice 7th grade) and all parents who have generously donated snacks to the Mathcounts Monday afternoons. Thank you for your support.
  • 6-8 Hip Hop Club is over, thanks for a really fun, student-led experience!
  • 3-5 Coding Club will meet Wednesday from 3:00-4:00.
  • 6-8 STEM Club this week Wednesday from 3:30-5:00 pm. On Thursday April 6th, 13 students will compete in various STEAM based events at the New Hampshire Technology Student Association's State Leadership Conference in Manchester. Stay tuned for the results of their competitions.
  • 6-8 Latin Club will meet this Thursday from 3:45-4:30. The Latin club is going to a certamen at Dover HS in NH on April 8th. This will be a day trip, not a weekend trip as previously planned (because it is both Passover and Easter weekend). That means that this trip is primarily for people who are interested in competing at certamen- whether they want to be on a competitive team or they are interested in trying it out. We’ll be announcing this in class this week and need to know by Friday who is interested in going so we can arrange carpools (parent drivers needed) and register our teams.
  • 3-8 Chess Club will meet this Thursday from 3:30-5:00.
  • i6-8 Indoor Soccer Club is over, we all look forward to more time outdoors in the weeks ahead!
  • Uphill Club hopes to meet this Friday at MidBurke Lodge at 3:45 and plan to take advantage of the longer daylight and return by 6:00. Stay tuned for communications from Sean, depending on the weather.
PARENTS SEX ED NIGHT by PLANNED PARENTHOOD
Planned Parenthood invites all parents to join a virtual/Zoom "Parents Sex Ed Night" on April 4, from 6:00-8:00 pm. The meeting will help inform and support you in talking to your children about topics of sexuality. Space is limited, please register here.
