Discuss your Work Experience with the

Dean of Medicine

For the past six months, the School of Medicine has hosted virtual small group meetings with faculty and staff to discuss their work experience. They have appreciated the feedback from participants, and the insights have been informative as they develop their strategies for the years ahead.

Because these meetings have been so helpful, they have scheduled six additional dates and invite you to join them to discuss how they might consider increasing engagement and building community in a virtual or hybrid workplace.

The time will also be used to allow for open-ended discussion.

Dates include:

· October 5, 9:10-10:00 am: Staff

· November 2, 9:10-10:00 am: Faculty

· January 6, 9:10-10:00 am: Staff

· February 1, 9:10-10:00 am: Faculty

· March 1, 9:10-10:00 am: Staff

· April 5, 9:10-10:00 am: Faculty

Please RSVP online. For each date they can accommodate 8 attendees. If you are unable to attend but would still like to share your thoughts, please do so here.

Announcements

WiFi in Building 3

On Tuesday, August 24 from 5-6 AM, the internet went down at ZSFG to upgrade the wireless controllers in the brick buildings. Building 3 was listed in the buildings that would undergo maintenance.

If you have any continuing issues with connecting to WiFi, contact Vanessa York and request to open a ServiceNow incident ticket immediately.

Updates Regarding Return to Work and Meetings

Last Friday, Chancellor Sam Hawgood, MBBS, announced that the date of return to on-site work has been extended for those working remotely to March 1, 2022. This extension will help us reduce the impact of a potential winter COVID-19 surge and prepare for cold and flu season that may be worse than last year due to greater social interaction.

As predicted and in line with San Francisco’s new public health order, through September 30, 2021, with immediate effect:

All non-essential indoor events are to be canceled.
No food is to be consumed at any indoor event whether essential or not.
No indoor essential meetings larger than 25 people.
Outdoor events are limited to 24 people max but even then should be carefully considered especially if the venue caters to large crowds e.g. a venue with food trucks.
The above rules will be re-evaluated in mid-September.
The only allowable in or outdoor event must be essential (business purposes not for morale), have no food, and a maximum of 24 attendees all with proof of being double vaccinated.

ZSFG DOM Staff Appreciation Event

You are all invited to join in a virtual celebration of our staff with the annual ZSFG DOM Staff Appreciation Event on Friday, September 10, from 12:10-1:00PM. The event will feature a staff photo slide and we will honor the recipients of the annual ZSFG DOM Staff Excellence. More updates to come!

Examining Racism and the AAPI Community

UCSF Healthcare Advocates for Social Justice invite you to join us on Tuesday, August 17th at 3:00 PM for a discussion called “Examining Racism and the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Community” via Zoom. The talk will feature Hideko Akashi, Professional Facilitator and Founder of Liberation Consulting who speaks on liberation, race/racism, privilege, gender/sexism, sexual orientation, intersectionality, socialization, internalization and systemic cycles of oppression.

UCSF COVID-19 Policy

Effective immediately, UCSF has made the following policy changes:

Everyone – regardless of vaccination status – must wear a mask or face covering at all indoor locations, while standing in line for or riding in campus shuttles.
Regardless of vaccination status, any prolonged exposure (unprotected exposure within six feet for 15 minutes or longer) to a person with confirmed COVID-19 infection will require a 10-day quarantine until cleared for work or study by Occupational Health Services (OHS) or Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS). Employees should call the COVID Hotline at (415) 514-7328 for assessment and instructions.
Students should send a secure message to the COVID-19 nurse through their personal health portal.
Wash your hands frequently. This continues to be an effective way to limit infections and virus transmission.

Honors and Awards

The ImmunoX Research Committee has awarded Rachel with a CoProject for "Mapping the cellular and metabolic landscape of human immune development".

"ImmunoX CoProjects aim to build immune profiles for untapped streams of human diseases at UCSF. Each CoProject is investigator-led and takes advantage of world-class staff and technologies in the cutting-edge CoLabs space."

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Resource

The intricacy of structural racism measurement: a pilot development of a latent-class multidimensional measure

"Structural racism is a complex system of inequities working in tandem to cause poor health for communities of color, especially for Black people. However, the multidimensional nature of structural racism is not captured by existing measures used by population health scholars to study health inequities. Multidimensional measures can be made using complex analytical techniques. Whether or not the multidimensional measure of structural racism provides more insight than the existing unidimensional measures is unknown.

We derived measures of Black-White residential segregation, inequities in education, employment, income, and homeownership, evaluated for 2,338 Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMAs) in the United States (US), and consolidated them into a multidimensional measure of structural racism using a latent class model. We compared the median COVID-19 vaccination rates observed across 54 New York City (NYC) PUMAs by levels (high/low) of structural racism and the multidimensional class using the Kruskal-Wallis test. This study was conducted in March 2021."
