COMMUNITY PANEL: REFLECTING ON THE PAST YEAR
On Friday, August 20, two organizations that serve residents across the City of Largo and greater Tampa Bay region came together to reflect on the past challenging year and a half during which a global pandemic as well as social unrest and economic uncertainty have impacted so many across our communities.
Ann Marie Winter of the Area Agency on Aging of Pasco-Pinellas and Micki Thompson of 211 Tampa Bay Cares reflected on the challenges and inspirational moments they have witnessed and experienced through their work. The panel reflection was moderated by Ana Alhoud from Community Tampa Bay—a nonprofit organization that supports communities through dialogue and cross-cultural interactions. The panel discussed the importance of food and housing security, mental health support, and remarked on successful partnerships with local partners to bring community resources to those who need it most.

The community panel reflection was streamed live on the City of Largo’s Facebook page (FB.com/CityofLargo) and a recording is available here.

NEW FLOODPLAIN MAPS EFFECTIVE AUGUST 24
The Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) updated the Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for the coastal areas of Pinellas County. The new map became effective August 24.

WHAT TO KNOW
  • If the flood zone or base flood elevation for a property changes, the flood insurance rate and the requirement to carry a flood policy may also change
  • By law, federally regulated or insured mortgage lenders require flood insurance on buildings that are located in areas at high risk of flooding
  • Standard homeowners, business owners and renter’s insurance policies typically do not cover flood damage
  • Flood insurance for financial protection is an important consideration for everyone subject to flood risks.

The City of Largo and Pinellas County Floodplain Management also encourage property owners to contact their flood insurance agent to determine how the changes will affect their flood insurance premiums and ensure they secure the lowest available rate.
