Dear New Rochelle Community:
I am writing to share today’s update on the repairs of Isaac E. Young Middle School and New Rochelle High School, both of which were damaged by excessive flooding from what was Hurricane Ida.
At New Rochelle High School, significant activity has increased. While a crew continues to remove damaged wall material, another crew has started rebuilding efforts that include reinstalling insulation and wall material. These crews will be working double shifts throughout the weekend. A construction management firm that has overseen our capital improvement work throughout the school district is managing this process.
Asbestos abatement will begin next week. Based upon thorough inspections, the amount of asbestos is significantly less than what was originally thought. I have received some inquiries whether it is safe for students, faculty, and staff to be in House 4. As I have previously reported, House 4 was not damaged by the storm and has separate heating and ventilation systems. There is no danger to students, faculty, and staff being in House 4.
All construction and repair work is being focused on the basement areas of House 1, 2, and 3, and the B and C wings. Once this work is completed, we will be able to safely bring students, faculty, and staff to the high school for in-person learning. The target date for this return is Monday, November 1. We will keep you updated as to any changes in this timeline.
After students, faculty, and staff return, work will continue on the library and athletic facilities, with updated completion dates to follow. We are still working to secure some satellite space for intermediate in-person learning and athletic purposes. I do not have any details to share in this update.
At Isaac E. Young Middle School, final repairs on the remaining classrooms continue, as well as repairs in the cafeteria. Crews are continuing to work to repair the damaged floor.
Again, I appreciate the stress that virtual learning has on our students, families, faculty, and staff. We are working as quickly and as safely as possible to complete these repairs and return our students to our high school building. Double crews are working double shifts, and will continue to do so until this work is completed.
I thank everyone for their patience.
Sincerely,
