WINTER READING BOOK REVIEWS

This was a great read for me. It was very heavy in theme, as it covers short stories that sometimes interconnect in the midst of a pandemic caused by a disease released when the polar ice caps melted. Many of the stories hit me, especially some of the ones including children (who are some of the most affected). However, it also managed to leave a hopeful ending of managing to rebuild long in the future. The writing was beautiful and it managed to pack a punch for every story so I would highly recommend it!

Set during the Great Depression, this is a sweeping travel tale based on a true story of two giraffes (who survived a hurricane) being driven from New York City to the San Diego Zoo.
The journey is peppered with interesting characters, danger, and a love story. I was mixed about it at first (mostly due to the gravelly voice of the audiobook reader and era-appropriate sexism), but ultimately ended up really liking it. It will make for good discussion at an upcoming book club meeting.

Both poetic and terse, Julie Otsuka does not shy away from the harsh reality of her characters, a Japanese American mother and her two young children, who are reclassified and sent to internment camps in 1942. She captures the lived trauma of her characters through childhood innocence and daily rituals of basic existence. The brutal and stoic actions that the mother takes to protect her children from the harshest of racism and loss is stunning. This book is an important read, exposing a shameful part of our American history.
