President's Message
Dear PTA Leaders and Members,

School has begun - some in person, some online and some in a hybrid format. The beginning of the school year is always a little overwhelming and certainly a little stressful, for our students and families alike. Remember, your family should always be your priority as you work on your role within PTA. There are not many PTA emergencies. Use your fellow PTA leaders, parents, teachers and families for support and don’t forget to ask for help. We at Ninth District PTA are certainly here for you!

Your Ninth District leaders are hard at work planning trainings. Attending trainings is pivotal to the success of PTA. As our trainings are announced, consider attending as much training as your calendar will allow but know we'll make the recordings available for your convenience.

We're also working on a calendar of online roundtable meetings to answer questions and collaborate as much as possible. Take advantage of our first event on September 30. You can sign up below.

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, this year is going to present us with new challenges. Every year does. Be flexible and look for the best in every person and every situation. All we can do is try our hardest. I know you will!

Ninth District PTA President

2022 Insurance Premium Rate Announced
One of the advantages of being a PTA is comprehensive group insurance at low rates. Your current PTA insurance coverage will expire on December 31, 2021. The 2022 premium will be $258 for units. Pay your new insurance premium by the due date specified by your Council to avoid late fees. Out of Council units remit insurance directly to Ninth District PTA by November 15.

Finance
Treasurers, pay your non-Totem
membership promptly

PTA members who sign up through the Totem application have their dues automatically forwarded "through channels". Treasurers, please remember to remit any other memberships dues you receive through other methods in a timely manner to either the council PTA or Ninth District PTA.

California State PTA has announced several membership challenges for this year and if the dues amount is being sent via check "through channels", be sure to allow enough time for the dues to be recorded in order to meet any deadlines.
Membership
Ready, Set, Remit

All PTA units that forward a minimum of 30 members through channels by October 30, 2021 will receive a certificate celebrating their success. No application is required.
The deadline is October 30, 2021.

Parliamentary Pointers
I'm a new Parliamentarian. Now what?

The parliamentarian has two key roles:
  1. Chair the bylaws committee to review unit bylaws each year and revise bylaws every five years
  2. Arrange the nominating committee’s first meeting, providing information on nomination and election process

Getting Started
Prepare– To know more about your position, review files from last term including your unit bylaws and standing rules. It’s also worthwhile to talk to the previous parliamentarian for advice and tips about your new role.

Meet  – Meet with the president to identify ways to work together to make board and association meetings more effective. Distribute copies of the bylaws and review together. This helps everyone learn more about PTA. To make board meetings run smoothly, provide information on parliamentary basics such as how to make a motion.

Health
Healthy lifestyle key to children's Academic Success
by Diana Godfrey, Health Director

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recommends children and adolescents ages 6 through 17 do 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. Compared to inactive children, physically active youth have higher levels of fitness, lower body fat and stronger bones and muscles.

Physical activity also has brain health benefits for school-aged children, including improved cognition (e.g., academic performance, memory) and reduced symptoms of depression. Plus regular physical activity in childhood and adolescence can also promote lifelong health and well-being and prevent risk factors for various health conditions like heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.
