Service Spotlight

Thank you to reporter Kacey Martin from the Star Tribune for putting WANDERLOVE on the front cover on July 14,2021, with great feedback from the public on the Danville’s River District walking trail.

WANDERLOVE was made by 25 community groups during the pandemic, with a significant fiber contribution by Goodwill of the Valleys. While walking on the trail, Kacey captured a quote by Mary Beth Sanders: “I have just loved the Yarn Bombing! This has been significant for me because I have just had a dear friend who was a fiber artist pass away, she would have loved this. It makes me feel a very spiritual and emotional connection.”

A Shout Out to our dynamic WANDERLOVE Community partner Collidescope!

Collidescope is a community based organization in Danville that gives LGBTQ+ members in the region a voice. Their creativity, inclusive perspective and vibrant spirit offers visible emotional and physical support through events, mentorships, affirming faith groups, supportive businesses, and community resources. A large team from Collidescope, led by Liz Cervantes from Averett, participated in WANDERLOVE from the very start of the project in January of 2021 and they worked side-by-side with the installation team to complete their site on the River Trail in July.

news From The DMFAH Collections ( Annie Chappell)

Collections Committee

.

Annie Chappell (Collections Fellow) Daniel Shogan (History Fellow) Aidan Thomas, (Head Intern) Mary Kent (Collections Librarian), Anderson Moss (DEAI focus Fellow from UVA) as well as DMFAH Board Members Sandy Saunders, Syed Amed, Steve Delgiorno, Andrew Hessler, and Vicki Hines.

This month, the collections team began the second step towards assigning new object ID and accession numbers to all of our DMFAH objects. This has been the main project of the team.

Librarian Mary Kent joined the collections team in June and has been preparing the collections storage space for optimal capacity.

Directing Goodwill Interns -- In late June, five interns were sent to the museum from our community partner, Goodwill Industries, as part of a program to introduce high school students to the workforce through paid internships. These interns have proven to be a great help in the collections process, as they are able to accomplish the tedious tasks that the other members of the staff have needed done, but rarely have time to do. These include preparing tags for labeling items, scanning documents so as to be accessible digitally for research purposes, and carrying items between buildings.

The Attic Sale

Empty out your closets before the fall, because our most popular annual fundraising event: The DMFAH Attic Sale, is just around the corner. We will be receiving attic sale items at the Museum a week before opening to members on Friday, August 6 from the public on Saturday, August 7 from 2-4pm. So clean out your closets, fill up your boxes, and bring it on over to the DMFAH. This yearly fundraiser is a thrifter’s treasure trove. All proceeds from the Attic Sale will support the museum’s annual operational budget. We thank the Attic Sale Committee, led by Committee Chair: Helen Earle, for making the Attic Sale a great opportunity not just for the Museum, but for everybody who wants to get in on the action of collecting or finding that one thing you have always wanted. So, put the first two weeks of August on your calendars. The Attic sale opens with a Members Only event on Friday, August 6 from 5-7pm, and opens to the public on Saturday from 12- 4pm. The Attic Sale will be open for two weeks, from 12-4pm (Monday- Saturday), and Sundays from 2- 4pm.
