RECURRING WEEKLY EVENTS
NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
July 16, 1952 - July 3, 2022

Beloved UUCUC member Kathy Robinson passed away peacefully at her home in the early hours of Sunday July 3rd. She chose to enter hospice care earlier that week, and enjoyed a brief remission from worst of the Leukemia symptoms and treatment side effects she had been experiencing.

Kathy joined our congregation six years ago, shortly after moving into her Green Street co-op apartment with husband Howie.
Rev KB and Rev Sally Away July 21 through July 30

Rev. KB and Rev. Sally will both be out of town and unavailable from Thursday, July 21 through Sunday, July 30. During this time, Reverend Martin Woulfe, the UU minister in Springfield, Illinois, will be offering pastoral coverage for our congregation. Although Rev Wolfe will not be in town for any hospital emergencies, he will be available to provide support by phone. Please contact Brian Franklin at admin@uucuc.org if you need Rev. Woulfe's contact information.

OUR CARING CONGREGATION
Please consider donating to the Little Free Pantries run by Julie Laut (Urbana) and AJ Herzog (Champaign), which they have maintained year-round since March 2020. Their Amazon wish list has been updated to include unique summer items. The wishlist can be sorted to identify high priority items. All orders sent through Amazon are delivered to Julie's house and split between the two pantries. You are also welcome to drop off items in person at both locations. Questions? Contact Julie (jlaut@hushmail.com) or AJ (zogs92@gmail.com).
JOYS AND SORROWS sent to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org for last Sunday, July 17, 2022.

From Rev KB: Joy for every child - those who skip thru our doors and those far far away - may they have supper & peace.

From Sam Beshers: Joy for my wife Lynn Wiley, who this week passed her exam for Licensed Clinical Social Worker and then on Friday accepted a full time job at Carle Hospital.

From Cindy Loui: A candle of concern for Emil Cobb who is in the CCU at OSF after his heart stopped on Friday & daughter Stephanie had to perform CPR until first responders arrived. He came off the vent this afternoon & they are waiting for him to wake up & get the next steps in his recovery figured out. They don’t need any help right now but please keep Emil along with wife Beth & daughter Stephanie in your thoughts. Cards can be sent to their home address which is in the directory.

From Emily McKown: I had such good care this past week when I needed an emergency surgery at Carle for a ruptured ovarian cyst. I just wish that every profession brought that level of care to people they serve. If cops and lawyers were expected to be more like nurses and social workers we'd all be better off!

From David Wolf: I will be interviewed on 8/15 about Somatic Experiencing - a body-centered counseling I love.
Please send your joys or sorrows to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org any time before the Joys and Sorrows portion of the service. They will be read aloud.
GIVING AND GRATITUDE
UUCUC Social Action Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive offerings from our congregation. You may donate to the social action offering for the month in one of the following ways:

SOCIAL ACTION OFFERING FOR JULY 2022
The Brennan Center for Justice is our shared offering organization for July. They are working to create a USA that is democratic, just, and free. Today we are in a great fight for the future of democracy in our country.

The Brennan Center is:
  • A think tank --rigorously researching important issues and finding transformative solutions
  • An advocacy group – working with elected officials and fighting in court for change
  • A communications hub – getting the message out to help create a well-informed public

Some of the key issues they are working on now are
  1. Voting rights – working to get Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and to block states from enacting oppressive voting laws
  2. Gun control – working to enact tighter gun controls, and to change the Constitution with the times
  3. Reproductive rights – now that we have lost the federal protection of Roe Vs Wade, states will have to fight much harder for these essential rights
  4. Reforming our systemically racist justice system and ending mass incarceration
  5. Reforming money in politics – working to end Citizens United – because Corporations are not people, and money is not free speech
  6. Rethinking and reforming policing and public safety in our communities

Many of us share these concerns, and it is gratifying to know that we have the expertise of the Brennan Center for Justice working toward the same goals. They deserve our support.

Watch the Brennan Center president, Michael Waldman, testifying on voting rights in Congress in this YouTube video.
