Baptists are not known for a robust Trinitarian theology. However, beginning this Sunday, we are in for a solid month of Father, Son and Holy Ghost! This coming Sunday is Ascension Sunday, when we think about Jesus’ current location: Is he “up there,” “in here” or “right there?” It’s “location, location, location” that makes all the difference.
The following Sunday, June 5, is Pentecost Sunday. We will celebrate the birth of the Church as we consider the descent of the Holy Spirit on the gathered believers in Jerusalem in a beautiful albeit chaotic moment. Is there room in our carefully ordered worship for the fresh winds of the Spirit?
Then on Sunday, June 12, we will celebrate Trinity Sunday, the first Sunday of Ordinary Time in the Christian calendar. What if we saw the Trinity less as an incomprehensible, dusty old doctrine and more as a model for equality, community and love? Could the Holy Trinity become our social program?
June 19 is Juneteenth, the newest American holiday. Celebrated in the Black community for generations, many of us have learned in recent years the history surrounding this important date. Using the Trinity as our theological backdrop, how do stories of liberation and celebration teach us about God’s hope for humanity? And how do we find our place in the modern movements of freedom, liberation and reconciliation?
Come, let us worship together!
