Response to the Texas Shootings

“How long, O Lord?” cried the Psalmist. “How long, O Lord?” is the cry of our hearts. The news from Uvalde, Tex., is gut-wrenching and awful. We still haven’t processed the last tragic news story when we are confronted again. Is there no bottom?

The Psalms of lament lead us into a place of deep sorrow. It is too fresh, too raw to try to make sense of it all. Sometimes there are no answers, sometimes it is just tears. Sometimes we can’t even form the words for prayer.

And so we sit. But we don’t sit alone. And we won’t sit forever—there will be work to be done.

—Scott

A Word from Scott

Baptists are not known for a robust Trinitarian theology. However, beginning this Sunday, we are in for a solid month of Father, Son and Holy Ghost! This coming Sunday is Ascension Sunday, when we think about Jesus’ current location: Is he “up there,” “in here” or “right there?” It’s “location, location, location” that makes all the difference.

The following Sunday, June 5, is Pentecost Sunday. We will celebrate the birth of the Church as we consider the descent of the Holy Spirit on the gathered believers in Jerusalem in a beautiful albeit chaotic moment. Is there room in our carefully ordered worship for the fresh winds of the Spirit?

Then on Sunday, June 12, we will celebrate Trinity Sunday, the first Sunday of Ordinary Time in the Christian calendar. What if we saw the Trinity less as an incomprehensible, dusty old doctrine and more as a model for equality, community and love? Could the Holy Trinity become our social program?

June 19 is Juneteenth, the newest American holiday. Celebrated in the Black community for generations, many of us have learned in recent years the history surrounding this important date. Using the Trinity as our theological backdrop, how do stories of liberation and celebration teach us about God’s hope for humanity? And how do we find our place in the modern movements of freedom, liberation and reconciliation?

Come, let us worship together!

Annual Reports Available

The May 16 Church in Council meeting was the last of the 2021-22 church year. At the meeting, all committees and ministry teams presented their annual reports, and these are now available in a comprehensive document. If you would like to see all that these groups have accomplished for our church over the past year, you can read the reports here.

Congregational Care and Concern

The prayers and sympathy of the congregation are extended to Cindy Bell, whose mother, Theodora Bell, died on May 25.
