Patterns and Projects in Northeast Indiana
The May 27 Prenatal & Infant Care (PIC) Network webinar reviewed the latest numbers for Indiana’s sudden unexpected death rate, and provided an overview of several local projects designed to reduce infant deaths related to unsafe sleep practices. The following presenters shared information:
What Does the Data Tell Us?

Nancy Swigonski, MD, MPH, MBA, FAAP, Professor of Pediatrics, Indiana University School of Medicine, Fairbanks School of Public Health, provided information showing that Indiana’s infant mortality rate is trending down, at 6.5 per 1,000 live births, but is still much higher than the rest of the country.
How and Why Do We Use Data?

Marlee Case, BSAHS, Pediatric Practice Specialist, Indiana University School of Medicine, shared how Allen County agencies providing free crib distributions and safe sleep education can contribute to research as a part of the Sleep Safely program.
Engaging Childcares to Impact Infant Mortality

Myla Rogers, Program Coordinator, Early Childhood Alliance, explained how the "Engaging Childcares to Impact Infant Mortality Project" is working to educate childcare providers and new families about safe sleep environments.
Safe Sleep Simulation

Lisa Clemens, PA-C, Provider Simulation Specialist, Mirro Advanced Medical Simulation Lab. John Lozo, Healthcare Simulation Specialist, Mirro Advanced Medical Simulation Lab, explained a pilot project to teach parents and child care providers why safe sleep practices are critical. The lab is using a 3D print of an infant with a removable trachea/esophagus to show participants how unsafe sleep positions can affect an infant’s oxygen levels.

Erin Norton, RN, BSN, MBA, Director, Community Outreach, Parkview Woman’s and Children Service Line discussed the opportunities identified by the local Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) to continue reducing the infant mortality rate in Allen County. 
Sleep Safely

Laura Dwire, Consultant, St. Joseph Community Health Foundation covered the Sleep Safely campaign created to to promote community-wide safe sleep training and messaging.
