Hopkins Center for the Arts Celebrates 25 Years!

Thanks to Hopkins City leaders and residents, the Hopkins School District, and Stages Theatre Company the vision of creating an arts center on Hopkins’ Mainstreet became a reality in 1997, and ever since, we have stayed true to our mission: building community through the arts.

25 years ago, we couldn’t have imagined that what was once the home of a used car lot would transform into a place offering international art experiences and a regional destination.

Even through the last few years, as difficult as they have been, during times we weren’t able to physically invite people into the Center, we were able to change lives through art and music.

Virtual exhibitions and artist talks, recorded live performances by local musicians, and engaging artist challenges reached artists and patrons from Hopkins to as far away as Ireland.

We look forward to furthering our mission, building back to having 250,000 yearly visitors, and continuing to build community through the arts.

PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING A DONATION  IN SUPPORT OF THIS ARTS COMMUNITY AND OUR NEXT 25 YEARS.

In honor of our 25th year, we ask you to give in increments of 25. Whether that is $25, $250, $2500 or .25 at the end of your donation – we leave that up to you!

By giving to The Friends of Hopkins Center for the Arts, you not only support great art programs, you help support artists who inspire and engage us all by sharing their gifts of creativity.

Thank you,

Lynn Anderson

Kar-Keat Chong "Impressions of Twin Cities in Ink and Watercolor"

Kar-Keat Chong’s life experiences have always been highly informed by the rich heritage and culture of his hometown. He grew up honing his sketching and painting skills on the vibrant streets of Penang, Malaysia, where multi-racial communities co-exist and live in harmony. Over recent summers, Kar-Keat has been out and about sketching landmarks and industrial relics in the Twin Cities he has called home since 1999. Working on location with fountain pens, watercolor and rice paper, he seeks to capture the atmospheric quality of these buildings and sites at a specific moment.

Susan Hensel "At Play in the Fields of Color Perception"

Susan Hensel makes sculptural textile work, transforming personal experience, private and public spaces, and experiences of beauty, through the alchemy of color, scale, lighting and placement. She combines mixed-media practices with fabric and embroidery across digital and manual platforms. Her desire to communicate ideas through art continues to be a powerful motivator.

Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives

Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 8 PM

Five-time Grammy winner, platinum recording artist, and AMA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Marty Stuart, has long been revered as one of the most accomplished singers in country music. From his beginnings as a 13-year old mandolin player in Lester Flatt’s band, to touring with Johnny Cash and solo country hits in the early 1990s, Stuart has mastered every conceivable musical style from gospel to bluegrass to hillbilly rock. With the talented Fabulous Superlatives along for the ride, this singer-songwriter celebrates American roots music and lights up the stage with rockabilly, honky tonk and traditional country music.

Ruthie Foster

Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 8 PM

Ruthie Foster is a four-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter who mixes a wide palette of American song forms, from gospel and blues to jazz, folk and soul. Described by Rolling Stone as “pure magic to watch and hear,” her vocal talent was elevated in worship services at her community church. Drawing influence from legendary acts like Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin, Foster developed a unique sound unable to be contained within a single genre. That uniqueness echoes a common theme in Ruthie’s life and career - marching to the beat of her own drum. Ruthie’s new album “Healing Time” is out November 18th.

Pure Prairie League

Saturday March 18, 2023 at 8 PM

Country rockers Pure Prairie League took their name from an obscure 19th century Temperance Union mentioned in the 1939 film, “Dodge City.” But this distinctly American band, with it’s 50 year career and long line of top hits, escaped obscurity long ago. Although fan favorites right out of the gate it took a number of years before PPL, formed by vocalist/guitar player Craig Fuller, had their first hit.

They couldn’t have picked a better way to start, and “AIMEE” not only put PPL on the map, but went onto become perhaps the most well-known and beloved country rock song of all time. Somewhere along the line Fuller left to replace Lowell George in Little Feat, but PPL continued to grow and prosper, with Mike Reilly as well as Country superstar Vince Gill, who was part of the band for a short time. Fuller eventually came back, and stayed for over a decade. Although Fuller is retired from full time touring, he sometimes joins the band for occasional shows. PPL continues to tour and treat their legions of loyal fans to music that sounds as good today as it did when it was first performed.
