A Reflection from Fr. Dan Burner
|
|
In year C of the Lectionary, we are given the opportunity to hear what we call the Lord’s Prayer in its biblical context as part of our Sunday readings. We recite this prayer often, actually in every liturgy that we offer to God. It is an important part of our Christian heritage. I still remember my father’s pride when, as a young boy, I showed him I could recite it from memory.
Different denominations use different versions mainly the Lukan or the Matthean. Other versions have been written including the lines written in the New Zealand Prayer Book. Meanwhile congregations have their favorite. This favoritism is sometimes even found between different service times at a single parish.
I personally prefer the King James Version that uses “which” as the pronoun for God. Neither of the versions in Luke or Matthew have a pronoun and yet we have come to use “who” because it was a modernization of the KJV “which.” My personal theology tells me that God is not a person, but rather a being. I believe “which” portrays this fact. More recently I have begun to think of God as Holy Mystery, but I struggle to pronounce that fact in prayer. (Age and repetition have had their impact on me.)
Meanwhile, I don’t believe Jesus was intending that we repeat the exact same words every time we pray, but rather was giving us a formula for prayer in general. In effect he was saying, begin by glorifying God, follow that with a petition that our daily needs be met. And ask for forgiveness for the ways we have separated ourselves from God’s love and the affection of others in our world. The Doxology (For thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory for ever.) was added after the authors of Luke and Matthew to the end of the prayer. We say the doxology in the Eucharist and morning and evening prayer, but not in Compline.
In effect then, the reason we say the Lord’s Prayer, in whatever version, is to acknowledge the gift Jesus gave us in his instructions for our practice of prayer. It might be instructive for all of us to indulge in different versions of the prayer in order to illuminate the prayer life of each of us.

The Black Lunchboxes
By Sue Kapp, Community of Hope
Have you ever wondered about the Eucharistic Visitors that are often sent out at the end of our weekend services? What is in those black kits they carry out so carefully, and what do they do with them?
The kits contain bread and wine consecrated during the service, and vessels and linens necessary to conduct an abbreviated communion service for parishioners who are homebound or otherwise unable to get to church.
The kits contain a corporal (the cloth that goes under the chalice), a chalice, a small bottle of wine, a purificator (the cloth used to wipe the chalice clean), a paten to set on the chalice with the bread during the service, and a pyx (bread box) to contain the bread beforehand. The items are small enough to just fit on a standard wheeled hospital table that rolls over a patient’s bed.
|
|
Our Eucharistic Visitors are members of the Community of Hope Ministry. We go when we are notified that someone needs a visit. Sometimes, that is just once in a care facility like a hospital or at home if someone is recovering. Other times, it turns into a monthly visit that extends for several months or years. Either way, we find that it is a blessing for us and we hope it is for the ones we are visiting.

SUNDAY ADULT EDUCATION & FORMATION
The Gospel According to John
“I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” says Jesus in the mysterious and poetic Gospel of John. Written later than the other three gospels, John has characters and events that the other three do not mention and it uses language rich in symbolism and subtle shades of meaning.
It is beautiful and challenging reading and we invite you to spend time with your teaching team and each other this summer as we dive into the Gospel of John in our Sunday 11:15am Adult Formation Hour. The program runs through Sunday August 28.
The reading plan can be viewed or printed by clicking here. Bring your Bible and join your brothers and sisters in Christ to explore how his Word can change your life.

Opportunities to Reach Out

Donate to Nourish Phoenix (formerly ICM)
Nourish Phoenix serves the working poor with food, clothing, and other basic necessities. Nourish Phoenix has seen a sharp increase in the number of clients reaching out for support, and there is a particular shortage of personal hygiene products (soap, body wash, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste) and cleaning products like laundry detergent. They also always need non-perishable, protein-rich food, nutritious children's snacks, clothes and shoes (particularly men's and children's), and baby care products. If you can help, bring your donations to church at any time, and place them inside the NourishPhoenix cupboard inside the front door of the sanctuary. (Where we used to put ICM donations) Donation items need to be in a bag or a box. They cannot accept anything that is ripped, stained, or dirty, or is larger than a microwave.
MEALS OF MERCY
If you or a family member are struggling with a short term health crisis, are welcoming a new baby, or have faced a serious loss, the Meals of Mercy feeding ministry is here with a hot meal to give you the strength to get through. If short term meals support would be a blessing in your life, please contact Deacon Patrice Taylor at 623 242-4692 or palshatti@allsaintsoncentral.org. If you’d like to join us in feeding the body of Christ here at All Saints’ please contact Lois Francis at lmfrancis@hotmail.com or call her at 602 214-0675. Contact Deacon Patrice for more info about the program at palshatti@allsaintsoncentral.org.

Do you have a need for prayers that will be anonymous? These can be for concerns, illness, celebrations or whatever your heart carries. Fill out the blue card on the Welcome Table. One of the Daughters of the King will retrieve it and a message will be sent out to the chapter about your request, so each member can pray for you.
