Suzy, a digitally-native enterprise market research platform, recently announced receiving $50M in Series D round funding from lead investor H.I.G. Capital.

CMR Surgical, the UK's leading surgical robotics company, raised $600M in Series D round funding from lead investor SoftBank Vision Fund 2 and co-leader Ally Bridge Group. The funding will boost the global commercialization of its Versius surgical robotic system.

Markforged, a leader in additive manufacturing, went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the MKFG ticker symbol on July 15.

Draper, a nonprofit engineering innovation company, received top honors from the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs for its development of the Low-force Expanding/Adaptable Pediatric (LEAP) Valve. The LEAP Valve is the first of its kinda medical device technology designed to grow with the child.

The Senate passed the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act of 2021 which aims to boost global competitiveness and, among other initiatives, includes several provisions related to intellectual property.

President Biden issued a broad executive order asking the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to issue a rule either banning or limiting non-competition agreements, as well as proposing a revised position on FRAND commitments in connection with standard-essential patents.

The Supreme Court’s recent decision in Minerva v. Hologic, Inc. reaffirmed that the judicial doctrine of assignor estoppel remains good patent law. Separately, the USPTO announced an interim process for its director’s review of Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) decisions, following a Supreme Court ruling that the tribunal’s decisions must be subject to the director’s authority.

The USPTO has requested public input regarding the current state of patent eligibility jurisprudence.

The Fast-Track Appeals Pilot Program has been extended through July 2, 2022.

The USPTO has reminded Applicants that patent applications must distinguish prophetic and working examples.

PTAB published an update to its Orange Book patent study, analyzing all America Invents Act (AIA) petitions challenging Orange Book patents and biologic patents through June 2021 and providing information on the number of petitions filed, institution rates, and claim outcomes in final written decisions.

China implemented a series of patent law amendments effective June 1, 2021 which expand the rights of patentees and aligns China’s laws with those of many other jurisdictions.

Brexit Reminder: September 30, 2021 is the deadline for seeking corresponding protection in the UK for pending European Union trademarks and Community designs with the benefit of the same priority date.

The Brazilian Supreme Court ruled that the guarantee of a ten year minimum patent term from grant was unconstitutional and should be void and null.

Canada published proposed amendments on July 3, 2021 aimed at streamlining the patent examination process to avoid unreasonable and unnecessary prosecution delays.

A federal court in Australia became the first to recognize non-human inventorship. South Africa recently granted a related patent.
