Pen Pal Program for Seniors

With the goal of helping older adults relieve feelings of isolation and loneliness while socially isolating during the COVID-19 pandemic, New York Foundation for Senior Citizens, the only non-profit, non-sectarian organization serving New York City’s seniors in all five boroughs, has instituted a ‘Pen Pal’ Program.

It’s based on the time-honored ‘Pen Pal’ tradition in many countries where two people get to know each other and become ‘pals’ by writing letters, or emails, to each other. By sharing news and events in their daily lives, they feel less alone and isolated. It can even connect people to their home countries and towns.

The program was launched by connecting seniors the Foundation serves in New York City with those served by a social service agency on the Isle of Sheppey off the southeast coast of England. These U.S. and British seniors have been matched and, with the help of staff in their respective organizations, they are writing to their ‘pals’ via email.
New York Foundation for Senior Citizens would like to expand the program to other countries for participants ages 60 and above.
The Foundation has staff who are fluent in a number of languages and teenage volunteers who translate Mandarin and Cantonese into English, and vice versa, so with China, as well as many other countries, language is not a problem.

If you or your organization are interested in participating in the program, please contact Linda Hoffman, President & CEO of New York Foundation for Senior Citizens, at [email protected] or by phone, text or WhatsApp at 917-554-5030. You can also visit www.nyfsc.org.
Call for Input: IFA Project ECHO
Adult Vaccination Mentorship Program
IFA is proud to announce the first ever Project ECHO Adult Vaccination mentorship program! This multi-session learning cycle will help improve skills to educate, promote and talk about adult immunisation, through the lens of prevention, access and equity, with the end goal of improving adult vaccination uptake rates.

This safe environment creates the opportunity to share knowledge and be part of an online learning community through guided practice, peer learning and collaborative problem solving. The program seeks to build the capacity and capability of patient and ageing organisations as champions of adult immunisation.

IFA is interested in understanding which topics would best respond to gaps in knowledge and practice in your organisation, needed to prioritise adult vaccination. IFA welcomes you to participate in a short survey on proposed session topics.

To express interest in the program, register here or for more information, please contact Ms. Katrina Bouzanis, Project Officer ([email protected]).
New York City Mayor Invests $58 Million for
Community Care Plan for Older Adults
Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City announced a $58 million investment in a Community Care Plan that will benefit older adults with 25 additional Older Adult Centers (OACs) that were formerly called “Senior Centers”, and Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs). The plan addresses the importance of creating a network of services that support the independence, self-reliance, well-being, and security that New York City older adults expect in order to live safely at home in their communities. It will also attempt to engage more older adults in requesting and receiving services designated for older adult city residents. The investment in Community Care will enable the continuum of health care and nutrition services, provide a safety net and community network that will allow older New Yorkers to continue living with family and friends, in their own homes and communities and will help alleviate some of the problems associated with mental health and isolation.

The five year Community Care Plan will be implemented by the Mayor’s Office for Health & Human Services, the Department for the Aging of New York City, and the Aging Committee of the New York City Council. One of their first tasks will be to issue a Request For Proposals (RFP) for Older Adult Centers and NORCs.
