Teacher of the Year!
At the conclusion of the 2020-21 school year, Jamila Colin was named “Teacher of the Year” at Newark’s South 17th Street Elementary School for her “tireless dedication to serving the community.”

Colin’s teaching doesn’t stop when the bell rings at the end of a day at the elementary school. She serves as the supervisor of United Community Corp.’s 21st Century after school and summer program for children ages 8 to 13.

“Working with the kids is amazing because you see them growing from 3rd graders into 9th and 10th graders,” Colin said. “A lot of them stay in the program and have graduated from the youth program into the teen program for high schoolers. It’s great because they are staying out of trouble and they are coming to us because they want to.”
March 2020 to current continues to be riddled with challenges that have been amplified due to the pandemic. The community has been in need and UCC along with many other organizations and individuals have risen to the challenge.
Upcoming Events
House Music In The Park
For 43 years, Mike Franklin has graced the City of Newark and surrounding cities with his DJ ability.

Sometimes he took the stage with Funkmaster Flex and Naughty By Nature. Sometimes you could catch him spinning at Wendy Williams’ Super Bowl party. These days, his circuit is Ideal on Frelinghuysen Avenue – keeping it low-key while also fueling his passion for making people dance.

This month, you can catch Franklin, who has worked for UCC for the past seven years, and a laundry list of other DJs for free at West Side Park on back-to-back weekends for UCC’s House Music in the Park distribution events on Saturday, July 24 and Saturday, July 31.

Under New Jersey's eviction moratorium, landlords can still jump-start the eviction process and be ready to kick out non-paying tenants the day the moratorium ends. Although Gov. Murphy lifted the public health emergency on June 4, 2021, the moratorium on evictions and utility shutoffs are effective until December 31, 2021. As a tenant or home owner you can begin preparing for this process.
