Baseball Is Back In The Bronx

The New York Yankees Opening Day Kicks Off an Exciting 2023

for the 161st Street Business Improvement District

Bronx, New York, March 29, 2023 – The New York Yankees will open their 2023 Major League Baseball campaign this Thursday, March 30 at 1:05 p.m. against the San Francisco Giants.

The start of baseball season in the Bronx is like the holidays for the sports bars and restaurants throughout the 161st Street Business Improvement District (BID). On Thursday, 15+ plus sports bars and restaurants in the BID will be open and ready to celebrate the opening day for the New York Yankees. Stan’s Sports Bar (836 River Avenue), Yankee Tavern (72 E161st Street), The DugoutBx (880 River Avenue), Bronx Drafthouse (884 Gerard Avenue), Billy’s Sports Bar (856 River Avenue), Yankee Twin Eatery (844 River Avenue), Vega Sports Bar (880 Gerard Avenue), Papa Juan Cigar Room (886 Gerard Avenue) will all be opening early for opening day festivities around 9 or 10 a.m. The restaurant Court Deli (96 East 161st Street) will be open like always in addition to Sidebar Café (191 East 161st Street) if you want a quick bite to eat.

The 161st Street BID’s hidden gems are still open in the district with two new gems opening soon. The food truck Fauzia’s Heavenly Delight is excellent and regularly has lines of 15-20 people deep when the food truck is on location at the corner of 161st Street and Concourse Village West. Molino Rojo Restaurant is turning into 161 Bar & Grill (101 East 161st Street) with a Latin Fusion vibe and Bodega Social (898 Gerard Avenue) from the folks who operate Bronx Drafthouse will be opening soon in the district.

The BID’s tradition of making a big splash to celebrate the return of baseball continues for 2023. Starting at 10am, the Bronx United Marching Band will be performing at Lou Gehrig Plaza before they head down to McDonald’s (51-67 East 161st Street) for another performance, followed by the Underground Horns, a New Orleans style brass band who performed numerous times for the BID in 2022 and before Game 1 of the MLB Playoffs between the Yankees and Cleveland Guardians last October. Artist Andre Trenier will also unveil a new mural on the side of Yankee Tavern on Gerard Avenue.

“This is always an important time for our business district as we welcome back Yankee fans to our area”, said Executive Director of the 161st Street BID Trey Jenkins. “This year we are helping our small businesses but are also doing a complete marketing overhaul of the BID with a new logo, a new website and numerous beautification efforts. Anybody visiting the BID will notice our efforts in 2023 and beyond.”

The first three months of 2023 have been transformational for the 161st Street BID. Last month the BID introduced a new logo that better captures the area with a nod to the art deco style buildings and a subtle reference to baseball. Just this past Monday, the BID unveiled a new website (161bid.org) that has a robust business directory and provides everything anybody needs to learn about the 161st Street BID. In addition to marketing efforts, the BID is taking on beautification of the area with the removal of stickers and painting of street furniture that has been neglected for years.
