This Sunday at SUMC
Last week we kicked off our fall sermon series entitled How Are You? We reminded one another that we don’t have to stay in defeated camps, therefore it is worth asking how we are doing and striving to be better for the Kingdom of God.

This Sunday we will jump right in with questions about our physical health. Often we treat this body like it’s to be used and thrown away, but that’s not right at all. God created us and loves us. We ought to love ourselves as much. We are people who believe in a bodily resurrection, so we are not just shells to treat with contempt.

It doesn’t matter where you are on the physical health spectrum, and every body has its own struggles. Yet, we can all pay more attention to how we treat our bodies so we can serve God with more energy for as long as we can.

What are you eating? How much water do you drink? Do you value sleep? Are you moving your body so it is flexible and strong? When was the last time you saw a doctor to have a check-up?

All of these questions can help us tend our bodies as worship to our Lord. And with renewed strength, we can love our neighbor in tangible ways. God’s power is made perfect in our weakness, but we sure don’t have to be creating more weaknesses by how we treat ourselves.

See you Sunday!

Keep Growing Your Faith
At Shueyville UMC, we believe that being a follower of Jesus is a journey. It isn’t just worship, spiritual growth, or service. It’s all of those aspects combined that help us grow closer to Jesus. Take a look at the opportunities below and try to take in each of the areas of emphasis: Deeper Roots (worship), Stronger Branches (your personal faith), Bountiful Fruit (serving God and others).

Deeper Roots
Outside Worship
  • Once again, we will be outside for worship this Sunday. Bring a chair or use one that will be provided. Grab a hymnal or song sheet and drop your offering in "The Little White Church" model we have sitting on the table.
  • There may be some produce to check out or other things to enjoy. Chat with people as you feel comfortable. Or maybe you want to take a little walk back onto the land the church owns. There are acres to walk and pray in.

Worship
  • 8:00 a.m. Worship, outside behind the church
  • 9:30 a.m. Worship, outside behind the church
  • Sunday School is offered during this service
  • Facebook Live Stream will take place early, before the 8:00 a.m. service, around 7:10. You can tune in to that service whenever you’d like. It will be available on the Facebook page.
  • 10:30 a.m. Worship Service is CANCELLED this week. We will resume 10:30 worship when we return to services inside soon. Thank you for your flexibility.
  • All services are masks optional.

Stronger Branches
Part of growing in our faith is prayer. Please take a moment to pray for these people and situations, plus what is on your heart.

  • Bob Schwake, as he continues his battle cancer
  • Jacob Vance
  • Jennifer Blair
  • Caretakers and healthcare workers
  • Diane Benhart, Erikka Vomek's mother, as she is battling breast cancer.
  • Jeff Hintz' family after the death of his brother-in-law, Issac, and pending funeral services in California
  • Issac's mother also died a couple of days before him, so please keep that family in your prayers
  • Jeff's step-father will also be undergoing heart surgery today.
  • Doug, Julie Mueller's brother as he battles back from COVID
  • Kimberly Smith, friend of Kathleen Kelley, who is healing from COVID and has a young baby
  • Kathleen's aunt, Bea Sexton, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer

EXIT X and 380 Kids  will continue next week, September 22, with a 6:00 p.m. meal. Classes begin at 6:30. Keep inviting friends and neighbors who feel comfortable, as people are longing for connection.

UMW
It was wonderful to hear that our UMW (United Methodist Women) have started meeting again. They had a great meeting last Monday evening at the church and welcomed some first time attendees. If you want to join in, please keep your eyes open for the next meeting or talk to Ann Uthoff or Karla Rossow for more details. And if you have 20 minutes, google the history of UMW. You will be amazed.

Prairie High School Grab and Go Pantry
Prairie High School has a pantry that is open to families and students. We have partnerships with a couple organizations for meal type items, but what we really need are Grab-and-Go items for students. Students really enjoy granola bars, fruit snacks, individual 100 calorie snacks, and noodle cups. If you are interested in donating please drop your items off in the church foyer. There is a blue tub labeled Grab-and-Go if you are wanting to donate throughout the year.

Scripture Text Groups! You can receive a text each morning with scripture and a reflection. Over 130 people connected to our church are doing this. Join us!

Bountiful Fruit

The Exit X youth group is going to provide a Trunk or Treat for special needs youth at The Arc. If you would like to help provide treats, we are looking for small, individual bags of popcorn, Chex Mix, or Trail Mix. Please drop them by the church by October 24. Thank you for supporting our youth as they seek to share the love of God.
