Happy 2020-Style Thanksgiving!
We have a few tips for celebrating Thanksgiving this year:
  • Reduce waste. Try making dishes from scratch to cut down on packaging waste. While you’re cooking, save your vegetable scraps to make zero-waste vegetable broth. When you’re eating, avoid disposable dinnerware. Finally, store any leftovers in reusable containers.

  • Eat plant-based. You don’t have to make the whole meal plant-based, but a few things like mashed potatoes, stuffing, and gravy are really easy to make without meat or dairy. Even trying one new dish will have a positive impact. Check out some recipe ideas here.
  • Stay COVID-free. Santa Clara County moved from the “Orange” to “Purple” (most restrictive) tier last week. When possible, residents are encouraged to gather for the holidays virtually and deliver meals to family and friends rather than holding traditional holiday dinners. If you have to get together, official guidance is that gatherings are encouraged to be held outdoors and limited to three households. More information can be found here.

  • Learn a little history. Unfortunately, the Thanksgiving story many of us grew up with regarding a friendly feast between Native Americans and pilgrims is not an accurate depiction of how things went when Europeans arrived in North America. Learn more about the history of Thanksgiving here, and take a moment to find out whose native land you are residing upon today. There are several local indigenous groups such as the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust and the Amah Mutsun Land Trust -- look into their work and stories!

Success of the Month
On November 17, Mountain View’s second team finished the Cool Block program. As a group, they reduced their average carbon footprint by 64 percent! The team had a few reflections to share:

“Everyone agreed we learned a tremendous amount, both through researching and creating presentations for the topics they hosted and from their fellow team members that brought their passion and unique viewpoint to the subject matter. We agreed that we accomplished a lot due to the accountability to the team. Many had wanted to prepare for emergencies for years and had just now actually done something about it.

What really stood out though was the level of trust, friendship, and camaraderie we had created as a team. All of this was done remotely. The Cool Block program was a much richer, deeper experience than any of us anticipated. Something we are grateful for, especially during these difficult times.”

Congratulations again to the Bush/Mercy 500 Block team! Learn more about Cool Block here.

Sustainable Gifting
The holiday season can bring a lot of joy, but also a lot of excess waste and harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Before buying gifts this year, think about what someone really needs and try to find it from a local, small business (with minimal packaging)! Better still, give the gift of an “experience” rather than a thing.

This list from Intersectional Environmentalist and this “80+ Zero Waste Gifts” article are two good places to start. You can also search The Good Trade for ethical and sustainable brands that make nearly everything.
