The REED Center team is in full swing for Spring! In addition to the ongoing PDC and Yoga classes, we have two ambitious multi-day tree-planting opportunities that will include lots of other activities (details below). We encourage everyone to sign up at the links provided below so we have a way to communicate with you if there are last-minute changes to any of these events.

Today we are highlighting:

  • Earth Day Weekend Celebration (Friday to Sunday): large-scale tree planting, concert, classes, camping, and more!

  • Our NEW Mind, Body, Earth event (Saturday to Sunday): community-building, knowledge- sharing, focused on reconnecting to the land; organized in support of our Tree of Life Project.

  • Drum Circles (First Saturdays of each month, starting April 1): a meditative practice that cultivates connection and a sense of belonging; first-timers welcome!

Our next on-site PDC Class is April 8: Plant Propagation: Grafting, Dividing, Cutting, Nut and Seed Growing. Sign up today.

Our most recent Introduction to Permaculture webinar was recorded and is now available here.

If you'd like to be kept in the loop on additional volunteer opportunities on-site, which sometimes pop up on short notice, please add your name here.

In addition, there are weekly volunteer days, a "Films in the Forest" documentary series in the planning stages, and more. We encourage everyone to check out our website periodically for updates and additions.

Please read on to learn more about the activities highlighted above...

Earth Day Weekend Celebration

In collaboration with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, our goal is to plant 5,000 trees and shrubs on 12 acres of land in a single weekend!

In addition, we will be offering three one-hour workshops on grafting and plant propagation techniques. Whether you're a novice or a pro, or somewhere in between, this will be a terrific opportunity to learn, practice and share skills that can be put to use in your own back yard or neighborhood.

On Saturday evening, we will be hosting a live concert in honor of our dear friend who passed away unexpectedly last year: Terrence E. Brown. We will carry forward and celebrate his great joy for life and his love of the natural world around us.

For those who wish to connect with the land even more directly, we offer camping overnight at our hillside campsites with spectacular sunrise views. Campers will need to bring their own food and equipment.

PDC Students can also earn PDC-credit hours for helping with this large-scale tree-planting event. For more information about this option, please contact us at events@thereedcenter.org.

What better way is there to celebrate Earth Day than to plant trees? Come join us -- and bring friends -- for all or part of this three-day celebration and experience the pure joy of working together to transform a damaged landscape into a thriving productive ecosystem.

Mind, Body, Earth

This two-day event is designed for people who are looking for a deeper connection with the land and with each other. Activities begin with a tree planting at 9 a.m. on Saturday and conclude with a Forest Tea Ceremony at noon on Sunday. Participants are welcome to attend any or all of the offerings. The full schedule of activities for the weekend is below.

Donations are requested for this event and will be used to help support our multi-year Tree of Life Project, which will begin its implementation phase in Fall of 2023. We encourage participants to make donations at a level that fits their lived reality, whether that is $20 or $20,000, or something in between. If you would like to support this project, but cannot participate in the May 6-7 event, please consider donating directly via our website here.

Volunteer Work Days

On the first and third Saturdays -- March to November-- we invite land caregivers of all experience levels to come out to Morning View Food Forest and help with whatever tasks have been prioritized for that day. It might be planting trees, building fences, removing invasives or any other timely task. Whatever the task, it's always great fun to be outdoors and working with others, as we continue to build community.
