Messages from Ministry

Sun Mar 19
1st-3rd Grade ClassOur Whole Lives: Christine H and Irene C are leading Session 4, Families. This workshop celebrates family life in all its diversity. Children gain awareness and appreciation of family configurations both similar to and different from their own. See the RE newsletter for Homelinks.
4th-5th Grade Class, Toolbox of Faith: Laura G and Nicholas A are leading session 13, Love (Gloves). Children will reflect on the strength and universality of love. The lesson will emphasize compassion as the goal of every major religion and the concept of universal love is connected to the love we feel for and show to our families and friends.
6th-7th Grade Class, Riddle & Mystery: Gail J and Gus C are leading session 13, Oh My Soul. The word "soul" appears in Unitarian Universalism in the names of some congregations, in hymns and in readings, in articles, sermons and books. As a religious term, UU youth will explore its meaning for them and think about the range of possible meanings for UUs.
8th-12th Grade, Youth Group: Youth Group does not meet this Sunday. Youth are attending worship.

Updated Spring RE Schedule

March at CUUC: Women’s History Month and Nature find musical expression in this Sunday’s solo piano works. The morning's Musical Meditation highlights as well the poignant exchange of vows between Tony and Maria in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story... Click here to read Adam Kent's blog post.

Board Open House

Board Open House, Sun Mar 26, after worship, Fellowship Hall & Zoom 6161
The Board of Trustees will host a hybrid open house to update the congregation on key steps of the ministerial transition, as well as to answer questions from congregants. The Board will also provide an update on key strategic goals for 2022-2023. Contact: Creighton Cray (creighton.cray@gmail.com)
Our chancel flowers this Sunday have been donated by Catherine and Chris Kortlandt in honor of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), on March 21. Down syndrome is a condition where a person has an extra chromosome. The date for WDSD is the 21st day of the 3rd month, to signify the uniqueness of the triplication ("3") of the 21st chromosome. WDSD is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. To learn more, visit https://www.worlddownsyndromeday.org.
Sing-Along/Play-Along Night

Sing Along/Play Along, Fri Mar 31, 6:00-10:00pm, Fellowship Hall
Christian and Kim Force host an informal, all-ages, Sing-Along/Play-Along night, to share our spiritual practice of making music together. We'll gather to enjoy some songs, sing-along style - or, if you're a musician, come and play along with us, too! If you have a special song request or want to bring an instrument, contact Kim (kimforce@gmail.com) or Christian (force2k1@gmail.com).
From CUUC LGBTQIA+ Social Justice Team

Next Friday, March 31, is International Transgender Day of Visibility, dedicated to celebrating the contributions transgender people have made to society, and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide. In 2018, when such messages were rare, CUUC member Tony Arrien created this wonderful public service video for TDOV featuring fellow CUUC-ers Joann Prinzivalli and Elias VanDette. As Unitarian Universalists, we understand that the full expression of diversity of gender and sexuality is a gift, and recognize the importance of opposing growing legislative attacks against the LGBTQIA+ community. To get involved with the CUUC LGBTQIA+ Social Justice Team, contact: Jennifer Stevens (jennifercstevens@gmail.com)
Tag Sale 2023

Community Tag Sale, Sat Apr 29, 9:30am-3:00pm, at CUUC
Ways YOU can participate in CUUC’s Tag Sale…
1. Save the date, April 29, on your calendar so you can come!
2. Rent a table to sell all those extra items in the closet that you no longer need and someone else may treasure. Contact Nora Freeman (norafreeman777@gmail.com) or Alex Sehdeva (alex.sehdeva@gmail.com). We will put up your table for you - you just bring and set out your items to sell (and take home what you don't sell). You can also split a table with a friend!
3. Have breakfast or lunch with us. Meals by Mahnaz is cooking and will have food to purchase throughout the event.
4. If you aren't selling, come early and help us set up tables.
5. Bring small appliances/small pieces of furniture to donate to Furniture Sharehouse.
6. Come later in the afternoon to help us put away tables.
7. Come any time of the day to chat with your CUUC friends and enjoy our grounds.
8. During April, help promote the event within your social network and communities. Click here for the tag sale flyer for buyers and the tag sale flyer for sellers to print out.
9. Bring your children or grandchildren. Have them hawk your wares, or (gasp) sell their old clothing/toys for a percentage of your profits.
PrideWorks

Our Social Justice Team volunteers came out in force for the first PrideWorks conference since Covid. Jennifer Stevens led the intrepid early morning bus greeters: Jane Dixon, Anne Majsak, and Terri Kung. At our Westchester UU table were Janet Press, Bob Indra, Tony Arrien (also a workshop leader), Tracy Breneman (also a member of the PW board) and her family Logan and Aiden. During the conference, the group overheard one young participant say, "This is the best day of my life!" We thank all our volunteers for living into our first UU principle, affirming the inherent worth and dignity of every person. Thanks to volunteer John Cavallero for the pic!

Appeal for Minister's Discretionary Fund

Our fund balance is dipping low. Please help us replenish so our minister can continue to offer confidential financial assistance to our congregation and community. Make checks to CUUC with the memo “MDF” or “Discretionary Fund” or visit our website, https://cucwp.org, and use the yellow Donate button (and consider checking to box to cover fees). Contributions are tax deductible.
Common Read - Pick Up Your Copy

This year's Unitarian Universalist “Common Read” is Mistakes and Miracles: Congregations on the Road to Multiculturalism. Co-authors Nancy Palmer Jones and Karin Lin — a white minister and a lay person of color — explored five UU congregations’ journeys toward Beloved Community. Copies are available to purchase ($22) after worship. Pay in person, or use CUUC's website donation button (and please consider clicking the box to help cover PayPal fees). Join us in reading together! Book discussion dates this spring.
Experience General Assembly

UU General Assembly 2023, Jun 21-25, Pittsburgh, PA or Virtual
General Assembly is the annual gathering of Unitarian Universalists, where we conduct business of the Association, explore the theological underpinnings of our faith, and lean fully into our mission and principles. (Check out the UUA GA video here.) Anyone may attend! The General Assembly Registration is open, and financial support and volunteering opportunities to cover registration are available.
Caring & Sharing

If we can help you or someone you know in our congregation, reach out to this month's primary caregiver, Lois Holt (914-329-0603, mediamomforlife@gmail.com) or her backup Joan Traber (914‐617‐9622, joantraber@yahoo.com), or her backup Robin Rocchi (917-656-6830, robinandal@verizon.net). You may also contact the CUUC office (admin@cucwp.org, 914-946-1660 x2).
Share the Plate for March: Interfaith Council for New Americans of Westchester

We donate half our non-pledge collection to the Interfaith Council for New Americans of Westchester (ICNAW), a coalition of local congregations (including CUUC) that welcomes refugees resettling in our area. To date, ICNAW has provided support to 11 adult refugees and 12 children, two of whom were born in the US. Click here to read a letter from the ICNAW team. Contact Robin Rocchi (robinandal@verizon.net) or Jane Dixon (lilrhodie@gmail.com) to learn more. Make checks to CUUC with the memo “Share the Plate - Refugee” and add to the plate or mail to the office. Or click here to pay online, and select “Share the Plate.” You may also select “Other” and type “Refugee” in the note if you'd like your full donation to benefit the ICNAW.
