A Message from Our VP of Academics and Ed Tech

The History of St. Marty's,

It is Thursday morning, a week before St. Marty’s Party and the Inner Court is teaming with students way before school even starts. They are bustling and making decorations to make sure the campus looks special for our little guests next Thursday.

We have a lot of important traditions at Carondelet. Next week we have St. Marty’s Party and families may or may not realize that of all our traditions, this is probably one of the oldest. Older than Kairos!

I thought I would speak to our amazing Carondelet superstars, Michelle Koski '98, our librarian, and Mary Beth Dittrich '79, our math program coordinator, as they are two of my favorite go-to people for all things Carondelet (ask Mrs. Dittrich about the cracks in the brick floor of the Inner Court, or Ms. Koski about what it means to be an associate of the Sisters of St Joseph).

Here is what I learned and am sharing with you... St. Marty’s is as old as Carondelet. Not exactly in its current state, but its essence is part of the school’s origins. Back in the 60s, the Sisters of St. Joseph ran several Catholic elementary schools in Oakland. St. Patrick's was one of them. In fact, the event was originally called the St. Pat's party because kids who came from St. Patrick's school lived in some neighborhoods that weren't safe to trick or treat in. The sisters enlisted our students to help. They would bus kids over here and throw a Halloween party for them. That evolved over the years as the sisters no longer staffed as many Oakland schools but still wanted to serve the kids in Oakland. The program expanded to the St. Martin de Porres school, which is why now it's called the St. Marty's Party.

The program has gone through several iterations. In fact, at some points, St. Marty’s was not even held during Halloween but during Christmas, and kids would come sing carols, eat treats, and receive gifts. In its current form, St Marty’s is a partnership with one of our community service partners, the Monument Crisis Center, and serves students in the Monument Corridor area. If you have not seen a St. Marty’s Party, you are missing out. There is a little Carondelet magic in every one of them, and I think our students enjoy themselves as much as the young visitors doall the while embodying our mission of love for the dear neighbor!

Faith + Heart + Courage = Excellence

Synopsis

R&J&Z  begins with Act V of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and keeps going, as the famous lovers navigate a world in which death isn't necessarily the end. Set against the historical backdrop of Verona's plague, Melody Bates' new-verse play throws old and new characters together over the course of an apocalyptic and action-packed 24 hours. Equally inspired by Shakespeare and modern zombie films, R & J & Z pushes the boundaries of theatrical humor and horror.

Junior Ring

Thank You!

The Class of 2024 had a wonderful junior ring experience but it would not have been possible without the amazing people working behind the scenes to put on this event. Thank you so much to the faculty and staff who helped give students their junior jewels, facilities, and IT departments for the intricate setup, our alumnae speakers Tammy Freeman and Eileen Brinder, and all the students who submitted photos, the Junior Council for being the driving force behind this event, and of course the wonderful Parent Association for your setup that went above and beyond for the junior students. It was truly a special day!
