THIS WEEK AT ST JOHN'S

Dear Friends,

We have a safety concern this week! A number of you have received emails from “me” asking for money or grocery cards. The email address is from a gmail account and it’s so “ideal” that I wish I had chosen it myself. But I didn’t and it’s not me.

This fake email request has gone out to such a range of people connected to St John’s that the person in question has either had access to our community over a period of time – or even receives this enewsletter!

I want to assure you I will not ask you to buy grocery cards or Canadian Tire cards – and I will not ask you to give me money. If you receive such a request, be suspicious! Thanks to all of you who contacted me and I hope nobody fell for it.

Fall colours Beechwood cemetery.

The beauty of Beechwood Cemetery this past Saturday for the interment of ashes for Dora Broughton. Thanks to everyone at St John’s who helped to make Dora’s service such a meaningful celebration of life.

Have you heard about grocery cards connected to St John’s? We do have that and here’s how it works. The St John’s Affordable Housing Committee buys Loblaws grocery cards in bulk (there’s a discount when we do that). If you care about affordable housing, you can buy these grocery cards at their face value, the difference supports the work of our affordable housing committee. Please see Peggy Lister during refreshments after the Sunday service if you’re interested.

Finally, while I won’t personally ask you for money, I fully support the work of our St John’s Stewardship Committee. Over the past weeks, we have included an insert in the Sunday bulletin with a reflection tied to the Sunday readings. These are beautiful reflections especially focused on abundance and gratitude with the theme “More than Enough” – what God gives us by giving us life and blessings is always more than enough.

We will be kicking off the fall stewardship campaign on the theme “More than Enough” on Sunday October 16. For five weeks until November 13, we will explore and celebrate “More than Enough” with words from our fellow parishioners and also with a special hymn from our new hymn book. I want to encourage you to support this theme with your prayers and intentions.

As we come into the Thanksgiving weekend, as we decorate the church with the harvest, may God bless you with abundance. Hope to see you this Sunday 8:00 and 10:15 a.m.

One wall, that's all we ask.

We are looking for volunteers to prime or paint one wall. We'll supply all the material. If you can help, or know of someone who could help (a student, for example, who needs the volunteer hours) please get in touch with Margot Cameron, at margot.thomas.cameron@gmail.com, or text 613-252-4654.

Zoom National Prayer Gathering for World Food Day

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank is hosting an ecumenical prayer service on Zoom. Says the Foodgrains Bank: “This is a time for Canadian Christians to gather and pray for an end to hunger. A time for us to know that God cares about every single person who lives with hunger and for us all to be encouraged in the actions we can take to make a difference.” This special prayer event will include breakout rooms so that participants can meet other people interested in ending hunger and pray together as we stand in unity before God. Download the World Food Day worship resource.

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank will be back in person this year in addition to holding workshops(here at St John's) where Canadians come together from across the country to learn about food security issues they will have a Hill Day where they will have meetings with MPs and their supporters will have a chance to advocate for supports towards their goal to end global hunger.

Let's show our support to their wonderful cause and join in the National Prayer Gathering for World Food Day.

ST JOHN'S DEMYSTIFIED

Did you ever wonder why people come to St. John's? What they believe? Why they worship the way they do? Why they always seem so busy with outreach programs, community engagement, social justice activities, and a million other things? You are not alone!

The Lifelong Learning Committee is planning a series of conversations to help all parishioners, new and old, to deepen their understanding and appreciation of who we are and what we do at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church. Over 4 sessions there will be time to engage in thoughtful dialogue on topics like these:

  1. Where does Christianity fit among religions of the world, and where does Anglicanism fit among Christian traditions, and where does St John’s fit in the Anglican tradition?
  2. Why do we worship the way we do?
  3. How do we live out our faith in practice?
  4. How do we engage with the world?

The above topics will be explored through four 2-hour Saturday morning sessions to be held (in person) on Oct. 29th, and Nov. 5th, 12th and 19th (10 AM-12PM). This is intended for everyone – you might be new to these questions or maybe you have been thinking about them for a long time. Join us for a chance to learn from each other and to share your views and insights.
