SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

SERMON NOTES

In the final discourse of the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus invites us into a new way of living together as a community. He tells this prophetic parable that invites us not only to see what this world will look like, but also informs us that we have a part to play. While it might be easy to say that we would care for Jesus if he was in our midst, what about those made in him image? This week, we are diving further into that question by looking at the passage of scripture that Jesus quotes as one of his first acts of public ministry. So, join us this week as we see Jesus anointed by the Spirit so that we can see how the Spirit is still guiding us as well.

May God Bless

Brandon

SPECIAL NEEDS

Anna Gerhardt, Sally's daughter lives in Barnardsville, NC. She has asked our help to assist with various items for her work. Her new needs are baby clothes, maternity clothes and Gatorade for workers who are aiding in the recovery effort. She has received a large supply of diapers, baby formula, baby wipes from other sources for now. She will keep us informed of other needs as they arise. Thank you all for your generosity during this time.

To All Holston Presbytery Churches:

WAPC INTERPRETATIONS FOR OCTOBER

Prompt: "Beauty in Death: Remembrance and Hope"

Next Month: Tuesday, November 5, 2024

Reflection guidelines: emailed with last week's bulletin, resending this week

COMING EVENTS AND MEETINGS IN OCTOBER

Our TRUNK OR TREAT / FALL FESTIVAL is THIS SATURDAY, October 19th from 3-5 pm.  There will be decorated car trunks with candy, goodies and other treats outside the back entrance along with our greeter tent.  The gym will have games, other activities and food, along with seating for older family members.  Volunteers will assist with the games and to distribute candy, school supplies and other items. You are still welcome to volunteer and join in the fun.  Come in costume and enjoy!

ROLL WATAUGA SQUARE - Watauga Avenue's way to celebrate Halloween is to "roll" Watauga Square, a subsidized apartment building at the comer of Watauga Avenue and West Main Street, providing essential household items to be used as prizes for the

residents' bingo games. These residents often lack the money and/or the

transportation to go shopping for needed personal and housekeeping supplies, and each bingo winner (and all the players are winners!) gets to select a prize from a table of donated items. Toilet tissue is a particularly popular prize (hence the "rolling"), but you may choose to donate any of the items on the lists posted on the mission bulletin

board and the boxes in the hallway. Our donations will go to Watauga Square Apts. after Sunday, October 27th.

GREEN TEAM AND RELATED ACTIVITIES

Green Team meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 21st at 11:30 am in the Church Parlor.

An Energy Commission meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 29th at 5:30 pm in the Conference Room. Ian Huddleston has sent a video walkthrough of our system that I want us to view together so that we can all have a little better understanding of how it all fits together to produce our power. I also would like for us to prepare for applying for our federal tax credit at the first of January. And lastly, we need to have a conversation about how we want to move forward using extra monies we have and will have in the Energy Efficiency Project Fund.

Walking in the Prophetic Tradition

By Jason A. Bembry

(224/BEM)

Contrary to popular belief, the biblical prophets do far more than predict the future. They speak truth to power, they tell the truth about the uncomfortable past, they indict empty religiosity, they advocate for poor people and working people while seeking justice--all at tremendous risk to themselves.

In Walking in the Prophetic Tradition Jason Bembry argues that the prophets have too often been domesticated by cultural impulses that reduce the prophetic message to prediction about Jesus or the end times. This book highlights themes addressed by the Old Testament prophets and connects each theme to modern people who exemplify passion for those same ideals.

In this sense the prophetic tradition comes to life in the lived testimony of Martin Luther King Jr., Dorothy Day, Myles Horton, Cesar Chavez, and Cornel West--moderns who stand courageously in this tradition. This book is a guide for all who seek a fuller understanding of the Old Testament prophets and who want to continue their work in the present.
