8 Gear Tips For Cold Weather Fishing
Fishing in the winter can be extremely rewarding. However, finding the best winter fishing clothing to keep you warm and dry when spending a day on the water during the winter can be difficult. How do you know what to wear fishing in cold weather? One of the keys to a comfortable day on the water during bitter cold conditions is proper layering. There are multiple layers needed for winter fishing, including a base layer, mid layer and outer shell. Equally important to your cold weather fishing gear is a good pair of fishing gloves, headwear for freezing temperatures, cold weather footwear and a good set of cold weather rain gear in case of wet cold conditions.
Proper planning for a day of cold weather fishing can make all the difference in your level of comfort, as well as your ability to concentrate and perform to the best of your abilities. Let's take a look at the type of winter fishing gear you need to tackle a day of winter fishing. Check out all the reccomendations here.

Logan Looks To Bounce Back
The 2022 Bassmaster Elite Series season was not what Alabama pro Wes Logan was hoping for. After a stellar 2021 season that saw Logan notch a victory at Neely Henry, and log a 2nd at Guntersville, his 2022 campaign was less than stellar. Logan's highest finish on the season was a 30th at the St. John's River, while he struggled to find his footing for the remainder of the year. "I know it sounds crazy but last year just seemed easy for me. Everything just clicked, where as this year was completely the opposite. It was just a grind for me at every single event, it was really difficult to even figure out things in practice," said Logan. Knowing that he has to fish his way out of the slump Logan is keeping a positive outlook moving forward. "It's just part of tournament fishing, you are going to have runs of good and bad luck. The only thing I know to do is just keep fishing, and eventually positive things are going to start happening again. I am planning on doing a lot more fishing during the off season this year to just get in tune with changing conditions and trusting my instincts again. I like the schedule for 2023 and I am looking to turn things around and have a solid 2023." Logan concluded.
5. Baits Not Being Talked About
Carefully designed and endlessly tested by MLF Angler Dean Rojas, the SPRO Speed Demon 55 Crankbait torments bass with hard-hitting and tasty good looks. Tipped with a premium computer chip bill, the Speed Demon Crankbait dishes out a super tight wobble that fish find irresistible all season long. Not only does the bill impart a tempting shimmy, but it also helps the plug to deflect erratically and elicit vicious reaction strikes. In addition to its mesmerizing action, the Speed Demon 55 also brandishes brilliant colorways and SPRO’s signature Mean Eye design. The bait is enveloped in tournament-proven paint schemes that expertly match bass forage commonly found throughout the country’s fisheries to make them wildly effective in nearly any body of water. Completed with razor-sharp treble hooks for premium performance right out of the packaging, the SPRO Speed Demon 55 Crankbait is perfect for burning the bank in search of a school of biters. It's All About The Pour For Lawyer
Bass Pro Tour angler Jeremy Lawyer is what we refer to in the industry as a "tinkerer". An angler who likes to make his own baits, whenever he can. Lawyer has a special affection when it comes to pouring his own jig heads. Check out what he had to say about the process.
"Little did I know how my first experience was going to grow into a passion for the next 30 years. My first experience with the lead process was as a kid watching my dad, uncle, and grandpa all pour lead from a ladle and heated by propane into an old fashion 1/16 oz ball head mold. I didn't even know it was possible to purchase them at a bait shop. I thought making them was the only way to get’em. Grandpa would order an old bronze 575 eagle claw hook by the 1000s and pour various sizes to last for months ahead. This process lasted for years being able to justify the work because you would only have roughly 2-3 cents in a head and labor time was plentiful with no real expense and propane was just collateral damage for the event. In the garage there was always a bucket of lead/tin wheel weights handy and so there wasn’t really any expense there so it just seemed to make sense and this process went on for many years.
After joining a bass club at age 18 and starting to experience the overwhelming costs of having to purchase all my terminal tackle pushed me to start experimenting with Do-It molds and bass fishing heads. It was 100% financially driven and a way to just be able to save money and have the tackle that I needed. The initial investment was a bit expensive but looking long term it made perfect sense. Somewhere in the early 2000s as my bass tournament addiction grew I wanted to use a flipping style jig that had a black nickel hook in it. At that time 99% of the jigs on the market all had bronze hooks. So after ordering a Gamakatsu catalog I realized there was hook possibilities out there if you made your own jig you could select your own hook through Gamakatsu. So I bought a few different ball/flipping jig molds, weed guards, and powder paint determined to make a great flipping jig with a black nickel Gamakatsu hook as cheap as possible. As I fished more regionally and experimented more I expanded on a whole line of tournament quality baits that I built myself and although it was still financially driven the idea of having something someone else didn’t have or the perfect set up “weight/hook size”was making my hook to land ratio very high and driving my confidence in local tournaments! Fast forwarding to now and fishing at one of the highest levels of the sport on the Bass Pro Tour…. my engineering and drive for building/pouring my own custom products is not as financially driven as it once was and leans more towards the idea of having something someone else on the tour does not have. Possibly like, a very small weighted head with a very large hook (and vise versa), differently balanced finesse jig, a heavy hook shakey head, etc….and with extra detail like eyes and color. And with the assortment of options from Gamakatsu Hooks knowing I can build anything with a super sharp black nickel Gamakatsu hook is just peace of mind!
Still to this day I love the idea of milling around the shop table building lead products. So if this hobby has crossed your mind I would definitely encourage anyone to give it a try. Just remember, you can make it as hard or as easy as you would like. With the Lee lead melting pot the safety factor is awesome and Do-It molds makes it easier than ever to build custom product. In time, if you feel like experimenting buy you a good Dremel tool and see what you can imagine up out of a blank mold or tweak one you have!"
