Hello Mia,

A safe and livable California where we ALL can thrive.

When our campaign says this is the vision we're fighting for,

this includes ensuring our children can thrive.

As a new school year gets underway, I believe that it's incumbent upon all of us, as members of society, to preserve and strengthen our public school system. Schools are where children build a foundation of self-esteem and community support.

Yet I am flooded with worry about the inequities in our education system, like chronic underfunding, systemic injustices, and aggressive school resource officers. Add in the daily fear of getting shot at school, and it's no wonder many kids cannot thrive when they repeatedly experience these injustices.

Too often, our schools unintentionally re-traumatize children, rather than create a safe and healthy learning environment for all. But when properly resourced and funded, our schools can be the gateway to change and healing our society's divisions.

Through teachers and support staff, school should be a safe haven for children where their physical and mental health are protected and they are empowered to figure out who they are and find confidence in using their voices.

Most of us have that one teacher we still remember today - the one who imprinted on our hearts and minds, teaching us lessons that stay with us our whole lives. For many of us, teachers are proof that one person can change the world, as their words reverberate across communities and through generations.

In the Assembly, I will have our teachers' backs. I will advocate for more public school funding and support increasing mental health and other support services for our students. Leading with compassion, trauma-informed policies, meeting students where they are at, and investing in equitable, diverse, and socially responsible education is our foundation for the society of tomorrow. Watch my Instagram Live Wed. August 24 at 7pm with Saugus High School shooting survivor Mia Tretta and her mom Tiffany Shepis. We'll discuss Mia & Tiffany's perspective as a family directly impacted by school violence, their gun violence prevention activism that has taken them all the way to the White House, and what they think schools should be doing to keep students safe.

As we send our kids out the door to school, I send my heartfelt thanks to all the teachers and school staff who work so hard every day to make a difference in the lives of my kids, of our community's kids.

Here's to a fantastic and inspiring school year!
