From AI to gene regulation:

Nobel-winning discoveries show RNA’s far-reaching influence

This year's Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, and Physiology or Medicine illustrate RNA’s profound impact across diverse scientific fields. The artificial neural networks pioneered by John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton intersect with David Baker's computational protein design and DeepMind's structural predictions by Demis Hassabis and John Jumper. These advancements align with Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun’s discovery of microRNA in gene regulation.

At the University of Michigan Center for RNA Biomedicine, our collaborative research environment reflects this global intersection of disciplines, driving biomedical innovations.

Faculty perspective on the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry:

“Cancer research has largely focused on transcription factors as key tumor suppressors or oncogenes. I hope this recognition will reinvigorate the field, shifting attention to these vital genetic regulators and driving greater support for miRNA-based therapies.”

Congratulations, Dr. Kalantry!

Sundeep Kalantry, Ph.D., wins NIH Director’s Transformative Research Award

Dr. Kalantry is one of three U-M investigators recognized by the National Institute of Health's High-Risk, High-Reward Research program. Read the full Michigan Medicine article by Kelly Malcom.

“This award will help us define novel factors and mechanisms that equalize gene expression between the sexes. Understanding how the two sexes reach X chromosome gene expression equality not only reveals how female and male cells manage differences in their sex chromosomes but more generally informs how cells equalize gene expression despite differences in chromosome number, for example in disorders with aneuploidies.” —Dr. Kalantry.
