Pastor Connection

Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old-and Sarah herself was barren-because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, "as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore."

All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

Church (Indoor) Picnic!

First Presbyterian Deacons are planning a church picnic on August 14 after church in Fellowship Hall (picnic in the cool!). August 14 is Rev. Dr. Kivett's last Sunday with us so we will thank him for his leadership for the last few months. Deacons will provide grilled brats and hamburgers, potato salad, baked beans, fruit salad, drinks, and ice cream sundaes for dessert. Sign up on the insert in the bulletin to let us know how much meat to prepare, or click HERE to print out a form. Please mail to the church office no later than August 8.

Irish Fest Fundraiser

Irish Fest will be coming to Lincoln Park, right across from the church, August 5-7. We plan to take advantage of our location and again use our parking lot as a fundraiser for the Buildings and Grounds Committee. We need volunteers to help park cars and collect the fee. Each volunteer time slot will last about 2 1/2 hours. We will need volunteers for Friday afternoon and evening, Saturday afternoon and evening, and Sunday morning. We still have open spots on Friday and Saturday! To volunteer you can also call Mary Mumm, 319-830-4853 to pick your volunteer spot. The money will be spent for building maintenance. The Building and Grounds Committee appreciates your help.

Christmas in July

A huge thank you to all who contributed to this special missions offering. We raised $675.00 for school uniforms for our Partner in Education, Cunningham School. This is a huge blessing to children and families in need of school clothes.

Neighborhood Play Day

The Mission and Outreach team is planning a Neighborhood Play Day on Saturday, August 20 10 a.m. to noon for children ages 5 – 10 in the Walnut Neighborhood.

We hope this is just the first of many such play days in the neighborhood.

Volunteers are needed to help on that morning. If you are willing, please sign up in the office. Thanks.

Thank You

We are so thankful to our First Presbyterian church family for the many cards, emails, and prayers on behalf of Pat. After several weeks in Rochester and multiple surgeries, he is happy to be at home, even though he now has to deal with "Nurse Kari". He still has several months of healing ahead of him, but he's making steady progress. All of you are such a blessing, and I miss seeing you in person, but I'm with you in spirit (and online Sunday mornings).

~Kari & Pat Narey

Thank You

From the bottom of my heart I wish to thank everyone who took the time to send their prayers, get well cards, and messages, calling me and even visiting me during my rehab. Thank you especially for the flowers and puzzles. I have definitely felt the healing in all of your gifts. There is nothing better than the love of a church family. You are constantly in my prayers. May God continue to bless you.

~Dan Davis
