VARSITY ICE HOCKEY
Greeley hockey returned from winter break to face league rival Pearl River. Greeley jumped out early with three first-period goals, led by captain Gabe Adams, who finished with the hat trick and an assist in Greeley's 4-1 victory. He was joined on the scoresheet by fellow captains Ilan Laurence (one goal, two assists) and Charlie Spar (three assists), and Ellis Adams (one assist). In net, captain Ben Madden stopped 37 shots, while dishing out two assists of his own.

Greeley next faced a ranked Clarkstown team on Monday. Greeley started strong with a quick goal by senior captain Ben Cohen to take a 1-0 lead. Some uncharacteristically sloppy play in the second period enabled Clarkstown to take a 6-1 lead heading into the third. Greeley got their legs back and goals by Adams and Laurence put the final score at 6-3.

On Wednesday, Greeley faced yet another top-ranked opponent as it took on unbeaten Rye. Led by Madden in net, Greeley battled Rye for the entire game. A power play goal in the second, Cohen from Adams, made the score 2-1 in Rye's favor. Rye extended the lead to 3-1 in the third, until Laurence snapped in a rebound off a Spar point shot to make the score 3-2. In the closing minutes, Greeley pulled the goalie but, despite constant pressure, was unable to get the equalizer, allowing Rye to escape with a 3-2 victory.

The injury bug has hit the skating Quakers hard this season. We wish sophomores Johnny Spar and Ethan Stogsdill a full and speedy recovery.

Finally, in pregame ceremonies before playing Clarkstown and Rye, Greeley paid tribute to Teddy Balkind, a 15-year-old from New Canaan Connecticut, who tragically died during a hockey game earlier this season. Teddy's mother is a 1987 graduate of Greeley.

Greeley faces Pearl River at Brewster Ice Arena today (Jan. 14) at 8:30 p.m. Other upcoming games include Wednesday (Jan. 19) vs. Lakeland/Panas at Brewster Ice Arena at 6:30 p.m., Jan. 21 vs. BYSNS at Brewster Ice Arena at 6:15 p.m., and Jan. 23 vs. Carmel at Brewster Ice Arena at 6 p.m. (Senior Night).

VARSITY WRESTLING
Greeley Wrestlers Continue to Battle with Impressive Week!

Greeley pulled off a tremendous 36-32 win over John Jay-Cross River on Jan. 6. Thq Quakers faced an energetic and experienced team, but all of Greeley’s wrestlers came out with energy and determination. Picking up wins were Josh Hametz, Ben Gottlieb, Kai Lueckerath, Andreas Gowdie, and Vinny Sasso. The highlighted match was by Julian Coku as he catapulted the Greeley team to victory by pinning his tough opponent in the last match. Additionally, this was Julian's first career win!

With the impressive win against John Jay-Cross River at the beginning of the week, all of the Greeley wrestlers continued to train hard as they looked forward to Jan. 8 at Mat Wars at RC Ketcham, with Ava Ametrano participating in her first women's tournament at Edgemont High School.

Ametrano battled and had her first career win by pinning her opponent. Congratulations to Ava, who took third place in the tournament!

The rest of the Greeley wrestlers traveled to the Mat Wars at RC Ketcham where everyone showed drive and some tremendous wrestling. Highlighted results: first place: Kai Lueckerath and Vinny Sasso; third place: Josh Hametz; fourth place: Diego Villaronga-Cortes; fifth place: Zach Haber, Corey Fitzsimmons, Andreas Gowdie; Sixth place: Luke Richards.

Yesterday (Jan. 13) Greeley secured a critical 34-33 team win over Mahopac, putting Greeley in first place currently in the league with two league duals left. The dual started out of weight order at 172 pounds, with Vinny Santelia picking up a win via pin fall. The next three Greeley wrestlers — Sasso, Lucas Saland John Flannery — all won by forfeit. Highlights included Hametz (132 pounds), winning by major decision, which added a critical extra point to the team score, Jonathan Kang’s win via decision at 138 pounds, and Gowdie’s win via decision at 160 pounds that closed out the dual for Greeley and sealed the team’s victory. A shout-out to Saland, who picked up his first pin in a post-dual JV matchup.

Next up is a home dual against Pleasantville next Tuesday and an away league dual at Brewster next Wednesday.
VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL
Greeley lost both of its games over the past week, but the team battled hard despite missing players due to injury and illness.

The Quakers traveled to league rival Somers on Wednesday. The Tuskers came out strong and had a 19-11 lead after the first quarter and a 32-18 lead at halftime. Senior Olivia Camhi led the Quakers with six points at halftime, with senior captain Kaylin Genda and sophomore Bella Schulman each with five points.

Somers extended the lead to 45-28 heading into the fourth quarter. Greeley went on a 12-2 run to cut the gap to 47-40 with 4:37 to go. Schulman scored six points during the rally. That was as close as Greeley would get, losing 59-48. Schulman led Greeley with 19 points, including four three-pointers, Genda had 11 points and six rebounds, and Camhi finished with eight points. Senior captain Julia Herzner had four points and six steals.

Greeley welcomed Scarsdale in a non-league game on Jan. 8. The Quakers again got off to a slow start, trailing 10-2 with 3:29 to go in the first quarter and 15-7 after the first quarter. Herzner had five of the seven points for the Quakers. Greeley played better in the second quarter and trailed 20-17 at halftime, with Herzner leading the way with seven points.

The Quakers kept chipping away in the third quarter and closed to within 27-25 with 2:15 to go in the third quarter. Schulman scored all eight of Greeley's points up to that point in the quarter. The Quakers kept the pressure on and took a 32-27 lead into the fourth quarter with Herzner up to a team-high 12 points.

Greeley extended the lead to 36-27 early in the fourth quarter but couldn't hold on. Scarsdale got a 48-44 win. Herzner led Greeley with 15 points, including three three-pointers, four rebounds and four steals, Schulman had 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals, Genda had seven points and four rebounds, and Camhi had six points, 11 rebounds and two assists.

Greeley is 1-5 and 0-3 in the league. The Quakers host Mahopac tonight (Jan. 14) at 6 p.m., then travel to Yorktown on Tuesday (Jan. 18) for a 6:15 p.m. game, then travel to John Jay-Cross River on Thursday (Jan. 20) for a 6 p.m. game. All three games are league contests.

VARSITY BOYS SWIMMING
In the United Kingdom, they have the outdoor sport of fox hunting, where the ultimate goal is to run the foxes to the ground. With SUNY Purchase providing their aquatic center as the competition site, a very talented squad of Fox Lane/Brewster/John Jay was swum to the bottom by the speed and depth of G-Swim this past Monday. The final score was 100-68 as Greeley captured firsts in all nine of the competitions (including diving) before the meet converted to exhibition only for the last three events.

It becomes clearer with each passing meet that the outstanding depth of top-flight swimmers on G- Swim makes it exceedingly difficult for even a team like FLBJJ, which has a number of great swimmers, to successfully challenge our team. This depth and quality of squad certainly portends well for the Section 1 Championships where many of our swimmers are already qualified.
