SUMMER DISCUSSION SERVICES

August 04 | "Summer Reading Book Discussion"

Come ready to share a three- to four-minute "pitch" for a book you've read lately—fiction, nonfiction, memoir, or biography. Remember to bring the title and author with you so that we can publish them in Reflections. I'm looking forward to hearing about what folks have been reading, and I think we always come away with some great recommendations. — Amy Warner

MINISTER'S COLUMN

Beloveds, what a few weeks it has been!

I have been reflecting on Faith by Sharon Salzberg, which may be a future sermon, and find it helpful in these times. She offers Faith not as a doctrinal or rote belief, but as an opening to possibility and links our present-day experiences to life itself. Perhaps my favorite description was "No matter what we encounter in life, it is faith that enables us to try again, to trust again, and to love again." For me, this manifests in my justice passions.

One of my justice passions is restoring our democracy. I join our UUA in decrying the recent shooting at a Pennsylvania political rally. This is not how we live our values. We support people voting, living our UU values every day, and taking action for justice. Some examples are: our UUSJ has a wonderful democracy program with a strong focus on resisting White Christian Nationalism. The UU Legislative Ministry of Maryland has gathered a coalition of many UU congregations to UU the Vote. There are so many options.

Another emerging opportunity for coordination, connection, and action is the upcoming UU Climate Justice Revival. Collective action like this can offer a powerful vision of the future and alleviate or prevent climate grief.

I wonder, what is your passion? What is the change you want to see in the world? What is calling to your soul?

Beloveds, may we be filled with lovingkindness as we begin our ministry and act for justice.

Rev. Kathryn

POTLUCK — THURSDAY, JULY 25

July's potluck will be held on THURSDAY, July 25th, at 6 p.m., at Penny McCrea's home at 26799 Mallard Rd., Chestertown, MD 21620, with the “Save Our Earth” yard sign (phone #: 301-908-5400). Parking is in the front yard around the u-shaped driveway. Weather permitting, we will be outside in the back yard. If it’s raining, it will be held inside the house.

LEADERSHIP MEETING AUGUST 3rd

from 8:30 to NOON @ UUCR

As I am preparing the final agenda for the Leadership Meeting, I would like to have two or three folks volunteer to help with the logistics of the day – please email me if you would like to help.

As a reminder, this meeting will be for every Friend and Member who would like to participate and for all committee chairs and members to attend. We will keep the meeting to the morning, to let everyone enjoy the balance of the day, wherever they choose.

I have received some feedback, but I am looking for more! Everyone is encouraged to reach out to me directly.

Topics that have been suggested to date include Strategic Planning, Committee Membership & Budgets, and the Legacy Fund Update. What else would be useful to discuss as we enter a new church year? Let me know.

Very best,

MQ

Short Summer Camp at UUFE

Aug 5th-7th, 5-8 p.m. - "What Do I Value?"

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Easton (UUFE) will be holding a short (3 evening) summer camp on August 5, 6, and 7 from 5-8 p.m. It will be focused on slightly older learners (rising 3rd-8th graders) and will offer a chance to explore personal values and beliefs in fun, creative, and open ways. The flyer is attached. For registration details, there is an email address at the bottom of the flyer. If questions, Sarah Walsh, UUFE's RE director, can help (childrens-ed@uufeaston.org).
