Washington County Historical Society’s
November Culture and Cocktails
Have you built or do you now live in a Sears and Roebuck kit home?
Do you know of someone who helped to build or still lives in one?
If this is you, we’d love to hear from you about your experience with this unique treasure. Sears and Roebuck offered these kits through their Modern Home Catalog program. They were delivered by rail car from 1908 until 1940, and they included all the wood pieces pre-cut and numbered so that anyone could assemble a Sears Home themselves. In fact, this seemed to be a family venture for dozens or even hundreds of Hagerstown residents during the first half of the 1900s. We believe the Hub city was a top area for these homes because of the railway hub system in Hagerstown. The home kits were taken off the market in 1940 so that materials could be diverted to the pre-WWII war effort.
On Friday, November 11, 2022 at 6:00PM, our popular Culture and Cocktails program will feature Mike Sokol, who will share his passion for these unique homes. This month’s featured cocktail is: The Southside, a refreshing minty cocktail with the perfect balance of savory and sweet. Doors open at 5:30PM and light hors d' oeuvres will be served.
Tickets are $15 ($10 for members) and are available for purchase online or by calling the offices of the Washington County Historical Society at 301-797-8782.
For more information or to purchase tickets, contact the Washington County Historical Society,

Landless Theatre Company presents
Lerner and Loewe’s CAMELOT
and Neil Simon’s LAUGHTER ON THE 29TH FLOOR
at New Spire Arts
The Landless Theatre Company returns to New Spire Arts this fall with the productions of Camelot at New Spire Arts on October 28-30, 2022, and Laughter On The 23rd Floor on November 12 and 13, 2022. Both shows feature a mix of local and regional talent.
“After many years of being based in DC, Landless is very excited to strengthen our presence in Frederick at New Spire Arts this year,” said Producing Artistic Director Andrew Lloyd Baughman, who appears in Camelot. “While The Weinberg Center and New Spire Arts tend to focus on presenting artists and companies from out of town, our goal this year is to showcase some of the professional artists who live and work here in Frederick.”
Each production features a blend of regional and local artists. Camelot is helmed by local director Terri Magers, and stars Kennedy Center and Wolf Trapp regular Shaina Kuhn as Guenevere. The supporting cast includes appearances by Oakdale Middle School student William Warwick and Urbana Middle School student Ademide Akinsola. Neil Simon’s Laughter on the 23rd Floor in directed by Helen Hayes Award Nominee Melissa Baughman and includes local actors Bob Causer, Rich Cole, and frequent MET actor Matt Baughman as the bombastic Max Prince.
Camelot (October 28-30) follows an idealistic King Arthur, who hopes to create a kingdom built on honor and dignity, embodied by his Knights of the Round Table. His ideals, however, are tested when his lovely queen, Guinevere, falls in love with the young Knight, Lancelot, and the fate of the kingdom hangs in the balance.
When the production premiered in DC last September, DC Theatre Arts wrote “Landless Theatre’s compact ‘Camelot’ comes with big voices! A well-rounded cast of 10 talented actors delights the audience and honors most of the beloved characters and well-known songs.”
Laughter On The 23rd Floor (Nov. 12 and 13, 2022) is inspired by the Neil Simon’s youthful experience as a staff writer on Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows. This ensemble comedy features all the attendant comic drama as the harried writing staff frantically scrambles to top each other with gags while competing for the attention of star madman Max Prince. Laugh your pants off in the comedy writer’s room.
Visit www.landlesstheatrecompany.org or weinbergcenter.org for tickets and information.
