One of the challenges which many of us face is that there is always more than enough work and never enough time to get it all completed. For many of us, it is easy to spend most of our time attempting to complete our to-do lists and not taking time for self-care. We often say, "When I retire, I am going to..." What I have observed is that retired individuals are just as busy as those who are still in some form of employment.
Scripture speaks to this dilemma. First of all, God established the sabbath, a day of rest when Moses was given a set of rules for the Israelites to follow. By doing this, God communicated the importance of taking a break for rejuvenation of the body and time spent with God to nourish the soul. Jesus repeatedly gave examples of how important it was to take a break. Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus going to a place alone to spend time with the Father and to experience rest.
This week, I am on a vacation with Paul. This is an important time for us to have sabbath. As your pastor, I need time to refresh my body and to have my soul fed. I also need to follow Jesus's example and provide an example for you to follow in your own life. The work will continue to be there but taking time for self-care is vital in order for me to provide to you the best possible leadership, partnership, and ministry.
I encourage you to examine your own habits. Are you taking time for sabbath? Are you letting the work wait and spending time to renew your body and your soul? If not, make this a priority. If so, thank you for setting an example for others.
Blessings,
Pastor Mark
