Upcoming Service

Everyday Adjustments: Living Our Values in a Complex World

Rachel Rogers

10:45 a.m., Sunday, July 28th, 2024

The complexities of the systems we live in can make it hard to figure out how to make good choices. How do we slow down and think through how to live in the world in way that lines up with who we are called to be, especially in days like these when the news of the world and our easy access to information can lead easily to a feeling of being overwhelmed?

Choir News

Choir Members Haley Clark and LaDawn Edwards will present “Desiderata” in the service on Sunday. Some will remember seeing this poem on posters back in the 60’s and 70’s. It was made popular as a song by Les Crane. The poem reminds us to “Go placidly amid the noise and haste,” and learn from experience while living mindfully in the present.

The UUCH Choir is taking a break during July and August. Regular rehearsals will resume in September.

Nursery Care

Nursery care will be available during the service
from 10:30-12:15.

Little ones can be signed in and out upon arrival and departure in the RE wing.

Painting the Beams

Dear UUCH

We are so grateful that the rotten A-Frame beams have been repaired and replaced so that our building will be structurally sound for generations to come. The last step in this process is deciding on paint colors for the repaired beams. Follow this link to a survey where you can cast your vote and, if appropriate, indicate your willingness to help with the painting. The survey will be open until midnight on Tuesday August 27th. Results will be shared during worship on Sunday, September 1st!

Blood Drive at UUCH!

UUCH will be hosting a LifeSouth Bloodmobile on Sunday, August 4th, from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm. This coincides with our monthly potluck lunch, so you can eat lunch and donate blood!

Please consider donating blood on August 4th. The need is especially great during the summer months!

For more information, click here.

4th Sunday ARE class will meet Sunday, July 28, 12:15 - 1:30 pm

This week's topic: "Preparing for the Journey"

Life is a journey. When we think about that journey, what do we think we need to bring with us? Our culture emphasizes the importance of material things in life. When we consider the economic, political, and social effects of the pandemic, climate change, and the proliferation of new technology (specifically AI), what challenges and opportunities might we anticipate? How have you perceived life changing over the past few years? How would it be different if, instead of acquiring and packing material goods for our exterior needs, we focused on acquiring internal provisions for the journey?

Summer Splash Party, Aug 4!

On Sunday, August 4th, the Hospitality Committee invites everyone to join us in the Fellowship Hall shortly after the service for a Potluck Lunch with the theme "Summer Splash and BBQ." Although BBQ fare is being featured at this potluck, everyone is encouraged to bring their favorite food to share, as a wide variety and large amounts of food are needed to please all tastes and appetites. Drinks will be provided. When you arrive at the church, please bring your food to the Fellowship Hall, and fill out one of the cards provided with the name of your dish and the ingredients. We ask that your food be ready to serve since we don’t have time to prepare or cook food before the service. We look forward to this fun and festive time together!

In addition to our usual first Sunday potluck, we’ll have lots of activities for the whole family! The children can enjoy outdoor water activities on the lawn (bring a towel and swim attire, young'uns!). While the children are engaged, adults are invited to donate blood at the LifeSouth bus. Additionally, the League of Women’s Voters will be on hand for voter registration. Finally, our own Matthew Bollinger will be our DJ and play lively music to get your feet moving! Wear comfy shoes, bring a dish to share, swim gear for the kids, and stay after service for a fun time for the whole family!

UUCH Partners with Habitat for Humanity

As was announced from the pulpit on July 7th, UUCH will be partnering with Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley this fall to build a house for a disadvantaged client. UUCH volunteers will be working alongside other volunteers to build a house from the ground up. This effort will require many volunteers over several weeks & weekends, so many volunteer opportunities will be available even if you have never worked on a house!

See the Habitat for Humanity website for more information here.

A Signup Genius will be set up once we know the build schedule.

If you have any questions or are interested in helping out, please email social.justice@uuch.org

CYRE News

Pre-K - 5th & 6th - 12th

Hello Parents and Caregivers! This Sunday we will have our final Summer class, and we are so fortunate that our very own Howard Williams has volunteered to lead this class! Please remind your kiddos to bring their imagination on Sunday as we will be unleashing them upon a room of cardboard so they may design and build whatever they can imagine.

August 4th /Blood Drive

Our first Sundays are usually muti-generational, but this service will not be, so we will have CYRE classes as usual. Following service, water activities will be set up outside in front of the church to complement our Blood Drive and Voter Registration Drive. Activities will be set up around 12:15PM so that everyone can have time to grab a snack and change if needed. If you would like your child to participate, please have

them wear clothing you feel comfortable with them getting wet and potentially muddy. Sunscreen will be provided but we ask you remember to bring your own towels. Also, please be mindful of tracking in water and mop up immediately so we can prevent accidents. We would also like to remind parents that they are still responsible for supervising their children during these activities. If parents would like assistance while they are involved with donating blood, please alert the CYRE volunteers before leaving to do so. We are more than happy to help, we just want to be aware so that everyone can be safe.

OWL Registration

For anyone who is unfamiliar with OWL, Our Whole Lives takes a holistic view of sexuality by providing accurate, age appropriate information while helping people to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality. More information about the overall program can be found on the UUA website.

All workshops for our Pre-K – 1st graders will be held on Sundays from 12:15PM – 1:45 PM and will include lunch. There will be a mandatory parent/caregiver meeting 8/18/2024 from 12:15PM – 2:15PM. The workshops will begin after Labor Day and will be held on the following Sundays: 9/8, 9/15, 9/22, 9/29, 10/6, 10/13, 10/20, and 11/10. If you would like to register, you may do so here.

Orientation for our 10th – 12th grade OWL will be on 9/22/24 and the first workshop date will start on 10/13/24. Due to the scope and depth of curriculum covered, the dates are still being finalized and will be released soon.

Little Food Pantry

Signups for the LFP have slowed to a trickle unless you are filling it without signing up in the signup genius. It’s hard to know. Our LFP is a much needed service to the neighborhood. Fill it with nutritious foods. Folks rarely take garbanzo beans or lentils (even though they are nutritious). Let’s try to keep the pantry going! Please, if you are able to fill it up, please note your name in the Genius. Also, you can bring non perishables to church, as there are baskets. A big thank you to all who do contribute!
