The Consumnes River Preserve

Consumes River is the last remaining free-flowing river from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the Central Valley. The Consumnes River Preserve is located on the river's lower end where it joins the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta tidelands. More than 250 bird species, 40 fish species, and 230 plant species, and untold numbers of reptiles and amphibians call the preserve home. The preserve consists of over 4 miles of trails that offer close-up viewing of the lush wetlands. Each fall to winter the migratory Sandhill Crane makes a stop in the preserve. The best time to view the cranes is sunrise and sunset.

Dixon Vernal Pools

Dixon Vernal Pools are located within the Jepsen Prairie Preserve just south of Dixon. The preserve is on a few remaining vernal pool habitats and native bunchgrass prairies in California. The vernal pools are dry and dormant most of the year but burst into life with the first spring rain. The Dixon pool support many threatened or rare species such as the vernal pool fairy shrimp, Conservancy fairy shrimp, tadpole shrimp, and the California tiger salamander. The Delta green ground beetle is found only within 10 square miles surrounding the preserve.
