Drain millage dollars (your tax dollars) have been spent making repairs to our drainage system by rebuilding and repairing pumps, installing floats, replacing the tubes and floodgate, etc. These floodgates are kept closed to prevent water from coming into the ditches due to high winds, high water levels, etc. to protect our community against flooding.
Our DPW recently found that the floodgates located at the end of Farley, Callahan, Nebobish, Cass and Halstead have been wedged open and left that way. If a farmer would like to irrigate from the ditch, PLEASE CONTACT THE DPW to open the floodgates and DO NOT OPEN THE FLOODGATES YOURSELF! These floodgates cost between $9,000 and $10,000 each and if you break it, you may be responsible for the repairs or the replacement.
Rarely does the person that wedged open the floodgate with a piece of wood or metal stake, come back to close them. This is a real problem as our pumps with floats will turn on and are working to pump the water out of the ditch but the water is flowing right back in. This results in astronomical electric bills for our drain account. We ask that you PLEASE STOP THIS!
Simply stated, the DPW needs to be the ones that open and close the floodgates. We appreciate your understanding and ask that you contact our DPW when you want to irrigate from the ditches.
Thank you!
