Unbelievably, Denise has been a teacher in the Plainedge School District for 32 years! She has spent her entire career at Schwarting Elementary School teaching third grade for four years, fourth grade for two years, and first grade for 26 years.
Denise has many fond memories of Plainedge, but according to her, the one that sticks out the most is when she was teaching third grade. “My class brought in paper towel rolls, empty tissue boxes, and empty milk containers to create a model of Washington DC in the classroom. Groups of children worked together to build and paint various monuments, buildings, and bodies of water. We arranged it all on the floor of the classroom and invited the principal to come by and see it. The kids had a great time learning about our nation’s capital.”
When questioned about her plans in retirement, Denise responded, “My plans during retirement include relaxing at the beach, spending time with family and friends, traveling with my husband, and volunteering at my church.”
After reflecting on her long and rewarding career in Plainedge, Denise offered, “Schwarting has been my home away from home for more than half my life, so leaving is bittersweet. I will miss seeing my colleagues each day and working with my first grade team!”

Pat Flamio has been teaching science in the Plainedge School District for 30 years. Throughout his long tenure, Pat has worked at both the Middle and High School educating students on a wide variety of subjects including 7th & 8th grade science, Earth Science, Chemistry, and even Biology.
When asked to reflect on his 30 years in Plainedge, the only thought that he could think of was that “there are too many wonderful memories to recall.” Pat is uncertain what the future holds for him in retirement, but he said there are a few things for sure: travel, garden, ride his bike again, and relax!

Pat started working in Plainedge 20 years ago for a special education program called CHAMPS (Children with Autism making Progress in Plainedge Schools). For her entire career, she has had the pleasure of working in self-contained classes at Schwarting and Plainedge Middle School; however, Pat has spent most of her years in Plainedge at John H. West Elementary School.
When asked to recall her favorite memories while in education, Pat responded, “I have many fond memories here at Plainedge, but I would have to say the most memorable ones are all the friendships I have made over the years with the most dedicated professionals. It is a bitter sweet time for me as it will be very difficult leaving my colleagues and all the special students that I got to work with each day.”
In her retirement, Pat is looking forward to traveling with her husband Richie and spending more time with family, especially her granddaughter Elle. She will also have much more time to spend with her puppy Jeter! Now that Pat’s time in Plainedge has come to an end, she had the chance to look back on her career here in Plainedge and reflected, “There are too many people to name that have touched my life here at Plainedge, but I have to say I was so very lucky to have spent almost my 20 years working with Special Education teacher Mrs. Denise Pisano and the rest of my wonderful team!!”

For 31 years Dina has had the precious gift of her career in Plainedge, but she began her journey teaching in the city for the first 3 years. According to Dina, her experience here has truly been one of the highlights of her life. Dina has worked alongside with, and learned from, so many wonderful teachers, administrators, and support personnel, and has made many lifelong friends. She truly feels fortunate to consider them not only her colleagues, but her family as well. Dina has had the privilege of developing and channeling her creativity as a 5th grade teacher for 25 years. However, for the past 5 years of her career, she has had a new position as a STEAM Specialist. When reflecting on her STEAM position, Dina wanted to share the following with her fellow STEAM teachers, “Thank you STEAM Team for being by my side, for being my champion and igniting a new spark in me.”
Dina is so proud to have been an educator as she believes this career to be one of the noblest and most impactful of professions - a profession that she cherishes more today than at any previous point in her career. She said, “It has been the hardest job that I’ve loved doing each and every day. Best of all, I’m so grateful to have had the pleasure and opportunity to teach countless students throughout my career. Generations of children, whole families, even children of former students, have all graced me with their time and affection. I have met so many wonderful and caring parents that have welcomed me into their families’ world, to share the laughs, cries, and pride that define all of our lives. Each name has been burned into my memory and each face forever enshrined in my heart.”
In addition to educating children, Dina has also served as a PFT leader for almost two decades, holding various positions on our leadership Council, but most importantly, she has worked tirelessly as our Elementary Vice President for the last 5 years. While thinking back on her dedicated service to our union, Dina offered, “I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to be a PFT leader and help lead our amazing union. After being a building rep in Schwarting for a decade, I have had the distinct honor of serving as PFT Elementary Vice President. This enabled me to serve on numerous committees, allowing me to collaborate with a multitude of stakeholders. I strived to help strengthen our bond with the community while always trying my best to advocate for our members.”
When questioned on her most cherished memories of Plainedge, Dina replied, “There is not a single part of my 31 years here at Plainedge that I will not carry with me with fond memories, filled with respect and love. I will miss all of it, every bit, but I will take comfort and profound pride in the knowledge that I can count myself among the fortunate few that have genuinely loved their job. For that, I am eternally grateful.”
Dina has lots of wonderful plans in retirement and is very grateful and excited for this next chapter of her life, “From Naples, Florida to Naples, Italy, travel is on the horizon while still keeping my toe dipped in the water of education! Here’s to family, friends, fun and sun! Ciao for Now!! As Dina moves on to enjoy her well-deserved retirement, she leaves us with one of her favorite quotes, “One universe, eight planets, seven continents, 195 countries, 7.5 billion people, and I had the privilege of meeting you!”

Eileen has been educating children in Plainedge for 14 years. She began her career here as a resident sub, then transitioned to a Teaching Assistant for the last 13 years. Eileen has worked in the Special Education Department at Plainedge Middle School supporting all grades, but specifically the Earth Science and Algebra curriculums, where she truly discovered her passion for these subjects.
When questioned about some of her fondest memories of her time in Plainedge, Eileen commented, “My fondest memories include working with the students. It has been so rewarding to support them and see their ‘A-HA’ moments when it all clicks for them. I have loved being able to create relationships with each student I have encountered. Additionally, some of my fondest memories include the friendships I have made with my colleagues. The reason that I have loved what I do, and the reason that I was able to support the students the way I do, is due to collaboration with my brilliant colleagues.” Although Eileen is retiring, she knows that she has made friendships that will last for years to come.
In her retirement, Eileen looks forward to traveling, reading, discovering a new hobby, enjoying time to herself in her backyard, and spending time with many family and friends.
As Eileen prepares to move on to other activities in retirement, she would like to thank her supportive colleagues for always making her feel welcome in their classrooms. According to Eileen, “It was always a privilege to be a part of the magic that happens in class every day. The Plainedge family and community is unlike any other, and I feel so lucky that I was able to be a part of it.”

Dina has been a permanent fixture at Schwarting Elementary School since she was hired in Plainedge a little over 31 years ago. She has spent her long and distinguished career mainly teaching 2nd grade, but has also taught kindergarten as well.
Dina has many fond memories of Plainedge, but according to her, some of the most precious are “being able to teach in the building I went to school in will always be a wonderful memory. Seeing children's faces light up and hearing them say, ‘I get it now,’ will also always be one of my favorite memories. Finally, getting a letter from a student in college that said being in my class is what inspired her to be a teacher was a very touching moment for me.”
When asked about her retirement plans, Dina responded, “First and foremost, I can’t wait to get used to sleeping later than 4:30 AM on a weekday! I'd like to finally slow down a bit and take a chance to smell the roses. I'd also like to travel with my husband, spend some quality time with my daughters, and I look forward to celebrating my daughters’ upcoming achievements. ” As Dina moves on to enjoy more time with her family, she would like to leave her colleagues with the following message, “I feel very blessed to have worked in a wonderful building with such awesome educators. I want to thank my colleagues for always being there for me! ”

Pat has been working at Schwarting for 21 years, teaching grades three, four, and five. Although Pat loved teaching all subjects, math was definitely her favorite, as she spent many years as the Math Olympiads team leader. She embraced technology and often taught classes for our amazing Teacher Center. In addition, Pat served on various curriculum teams and was on EALT for many years. Beyond her teaching duties, she co-chaired the We Make a Difference Ceremony for a few years and was even the board observer for the PFT.
When asked about her best times in Plainedge, Pat responded, “I have so many fond memories that it would be difficult to choose just a few. I loved connecting with the children and my colleagues. I loved learning and perfecting my craft over the years.”
In her retirement, she plans on enjoying her three beautiful grandchildren and will soon be busy renovating her vacation home in the Poconos. Recently, Pat completed training to become a volunteer court-appointed special advocate for foster children and will be assigned cases soon. According to Pat, “I believe that we have a responsibility to give back in this world. I have been blessed beyond measure.”

Scott has had the privileged of educating children for over 32 years in Plainedge - all of those years at the High School.
Throughout Scott’s long and very distinguished career, he taught an extremely wide variety of Social Studies classes including AP European History, AP World History, Global Studies 9 and 10, US History, Economics, Civics and Criminal Justice.
When questioned about his best memories at Plainedge, Scott answered, “There are many fond memories of working with students as well as working alongside talented, dedicated colleagues.”
Amazingly, 25 of his 32 years in Plainedge were spent in service to the Plainedge Federation of Teachers. Scott spent 8 years as a high school building representative and an astonishing 17 years as our Treasurer. While thinking about his many years of dedicated leadership in the PFT, Scott reflected, “It was one of the most important things I have done in my professional capacity as a teacher. I have served 3 Union Presidents (including our present one) having witnessed firsthand their hard work and sacrifices they make. Having sat on three different contract negotiations spanning 15 years, gives me a little idea what is involved. Most of our members never see what takes place behind the scenes. It may be easy for some to criticize the union leadership, but they do an excellent job for all of us.”
Although Scott is retiring, he still plans to work in some capacity, but probably with a much more flexible schedule and much closer to home. He also plans to travel with his wife and looks forward to spending more time with their sons, even though they are young adults starting their own adventures.
As Scott leaves to enjoy retirement, he had a few final words for his Plainedge family, “I hope you will stay in touch with me. Though it may be cliché, Plainedge is a unique and, at times, an extraordinary place.”

Barbara is retiring after finishing an astonishing 39 years in education, of which 37 were spent teaching children in Plainedge. She was initially hired to teach kindergarten at Eastplain, but was transferred to John H. West the very next year. West has since remained her home away from home for the last 36 years of her career. Barbara began with 1st grade at West, but since then she has taught 3rd grade, 4th grade, and most recently has been privileged to work with children as an AIS provider. In addition to being an educator, Barbara is also the most senior member of our PFT Council, serving our union well for over two decades as the building representative from West.
When asked to share some of her favorite memories in Plainedge, Barbara replied, “I have so many fond memories of Plainedge. I was involved with Strategic Planning, after school workshops, and directing the school plays just to name a few activities. I loved being the Director of the Teacher Center and planning staff development. I also enjoyed making a difference as a union rep for about 25 years. One of my fondest memories was starting the Retirement Assemblies at JHW. I love that I was a part of celebrating a teacher’s career in Plainedge. This tradition was started in the early 2000’s, and it came full circle when I was honored this year.”
In retirement, Barbara plans on enjoying more time with her family and friends in a relaxed atmosphere. There is little doubt that Barbara will be remembered for many years to come in John H. West and would like to leave her colleagues with the following message: “I will miss all of my dear friends that I have made in Plainedge. I feel very blessed. They are friends that have become family.”

It might be hard to believe, but Maryann has been working as a teaching assistant for the Special Education department in Plainedge HS for the last 35 years. She has been responsible for helping to educate students on a very wide variety of subjects, but her main area has been Global Studies. When asked to share some of her best memories from her many years in the HS, Maryann responded, “My fondest memories are the times when my students came back to thank me for all that I had done for them. It made me extremely happy that I was able to make a difference in their lives.”
As Maryann transitions into retirement, she plans to travel and spend a lot more time with friends and family. Upon leaving Plainedge, Maryann offered, “I would like to thank all of my friends and colleagues for being a part of my life for all these years. You have been there for me in good times and bad. Over the years, I have made many life-long friendships which I value tremendously. It was a pleasure to be a part of such a wonderful group of people. I wish you all the best of health and happiness now and always. While I will miss you all very much, it is now time for me to start the next chapter of my life. It is now with mixed emotions that I say good-bye and send my love to all of you.”

Rachelle has just completed her 18th year as an educator in the Plainedge School District. Throughout her career, she has taught an extremely wide variety of subjects, including the CHAMPS program at John H. West, Life Skills at the Middle School and 15:1:1 classes at the Middle School. In addition to teaching at the Middle School, Rachelle is very proud to share that she has also worked at all three of our elementary schools during her almost two-decade career in Plainedge.
Rachelle has a lot of great memories from working in Plainedge, but according to her, “My fondest memories include my time spent with all of my students, the support I received, and friendships that I have made in each of my teaching experiences. I was happy to be part of the Teacher Center, the teacher mentoring program, and the writing committee that developed the proposal that awarded us the title as a Middle School Essential Elements: School to Watch.
Now that Rachelle is retiring, she will be able to spend time with family and friends whenever the opportunity arises, rather than only the weekends and when there are school breaks and holidays. She intends to resume her passion for reading and cruise travel when it is safe to do so. As Rachelle departs Plainedge for all the world has to offer her in retirement, Rachelle wanted to let her colleagues know, “It has been my honor and pleasure to work with so many amazing, caring and supportive people. Although I am no longer teaching, I will continue my connections with the lifelong friends that I have made. I am so thankful for all of the opportunities that were awarded to me.”
