The Tenth Sunday After Pentecost - 8.14.2022
Almighty God, who created us in your own image: Grant us grace fearlessly to contend against evil and to make no peace with oppression; and, that we may reverently use our freedom, help us to employ it in the maintenance of justice in our communities and among the nations, to the glory of your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Collect for Social Justice - Book of Common Prayer

Reflection
Compassion asks us to go where it hurts, to enter into the places of pain, to share in brokenness, fear, confusion, and anguish. Compassion challenges us to cry out with those in misery, to mourn with those who are lonely, to weep with those in tears. Compassion requires us to be weak with the weak, vulnerable with the vulnerable, and powerless with the powerless. Compassion means full immersion in the condition of being human.

Henri Nouwen

And speaking of compassion, during this time of busy summer travel check out this post from Nadia Bolz Weber, with thanks to Mo. Alon for passing it along.

We will celebrate the life of Jeanette Matthews here at Grace on Sunday, August 14 at 1:00pm. The Rev. A. Meigs Ross will be celebrant. We invite everyone to join us for this joyful remembrance of Jeanette, whose originally scheduled service was put on hold due to the pandemic.
Announcements & Ongoing Programs
SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 at 10:00am
Join us in Memorial Hall at 10:00am on Saturday, August 13 as we assemble meals to be distributed to the homeless poor of New York City through Midnight Run. If you are able to bring necessary food items (ex: lunch meat, cheese, bread, cookies, etc.), please email Heidi at nyack13@gmail.com to make sure you are included on the list.
SAVE THE DATE!
Coming on Wednesday, August 31 at 7:00pm, the Adult Spiritual Formation Commission will feature a group reading of the short play “Lazarus,” by Rowan Williams, moderated by actress Roberta Nobleman. “Lazarus” is the final of three plays from Rowan’s book, “Shakeshafte and Other Plays”and is a brief meditation on the 11th chapter of John’s Gospel “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live’.”

Rowan Williams weaves theological reflection and poetry into this drama for three voices that raises some profound questions about life and death. Following the reading there will be some time for discussing the play and reflecting about what Jesus’s words say to us today.
CLARIFICATION
We’ve been asked to clarify some information in Thrift Shop report as printed in the vestry minutes included in the August Messenger.
  •       The departure of Theresa Bergen and Kickie Fulmor as Thrift Shop co-chairs is not imminent, although they did want to remind people of their age and eventual retirement and thus begin planning for succession.
  •       The Thrift Shop’s  monthly donation of $1,000 is used as the vestry sees fit and is not earmarked for the diocesan assessment.
  •       The arrival in town of new consignment shops is a good thing as it increases Nyack's reputation as a fun place to shop.

REMEMBER YOUR PEOPLE TO PEOPLE DONATIONS - THE NEED IS GREAT
When you come to church please bring non-perishable food items to leave in the basket in the narthex. Peanut butter, tuna fish and cereal are greatly appreciated. If you don’t make it to church, you can always drop items off during office hours.

GIFT CARDS & LAUNDRY SUPPORT NEEDED
Occasionally individuals and families come to us with very basic immediate needs, like food and diapers for their children. When possible we try to help with small gift cards for stores like ShopRite, Target, or Walgreen’s. We’ve also found that help with laundry needs is appreciated, and have put together bags with quarters/soap pods/dryer sheets. We welcome donations of gift cards or materials/change laundry packages so we are prepared when the need arises — just bring them to the office or drop cards in the plate on Sundays.

Parting Thought
YES
By William Stafford

It could happen any time, tornado,
earthquake, Armageddon. It could happen.
Or sunshine, love, salvation.
It could, you know. That's why we wake
and look out––no guarantees
in this life.

But some bonuses, like morning,
like right now, like noon,
like evening.
