Some of the September Event Reports
Kula's first (and not last) Cooking Class
Last Saturday Heather from Taste and Technique came out to share her cooking skills. We learned how to make a salsa made of ground cherries, a peach caprese and a gazpacho, all made with fresh ingredients picked at the farm. We're so thankful for her to donate her precious time and to fit us into her busy schedule. She wants to do a cooking class for youth next, sounds good?
Foraged Feast

Thanks to everyone who came out to our second Foraged potluck at the farm. Wild pestos, Mead, Dandelions, Paw Paws, Acorns, Figs, Sumac, Pear, Curries, Salads, Grilled Corn, Eggplant, Tomatoes and Beach Plums were just some of the featured ingredients and dishes enjoyed. Live music made for a rockin' eve. We appreciate everyone and the musicians who took the time to come celebrate wild foods and music with us!
Mushroom Growing and Cooking Class
Thanks to Deanna Greene for showing us natural methods for encouraging gourmet mushrooms to grow outdoors. Using old grow blocks from small scale mushroom growers and straw we inoculated a shady area at the farm with Oyster mushrooms. With a few local mushroom growers in our area and our love of recycling we look forward to inoculating other shaded areas at the farm with these methods. Deanna also cooked us up some tasty lions mane after lowering our blood pressure and cholesterol while boosting our brain power.

Kids Gardening Class
All about trees
Ages 5-9
Saturday - Oct. 16
10:30am - 12pm
Have you ever wondered what animals live in trees?

What are some animals that depend on trees?

Here are some questions we will find out during our discovery of trees:
What do trees provide for these plants and animals? Can you see signs of life on the trunk, branches, roots, and leaves? (Children will look on the ground around the tree for fallen leaves, twigs, bark, seeds, fruits, or nuts.)

While observing a tree, children will learn about the different ways plants and animals can find food, water, shelter, and living space. We will use our sense of hearing to locate more plants and animals.
Finally, we will compare a tree to your own home, or habitat. How are they alike or different?

We will then make a fun project showing which animals live in our trees!
Vegan Farm to Table Dinner

With Guest Chef Omer Basatemur
$65.- BYOB
Friday - Oct. 22
5:30 pm
Please join us for a special evening at the Kula Urban Farm with featured guest chef Omer Basatemur. Omer has provided an Asian, Thai, Mexican, and American inspired vegan menu at Kaya's Kitchen in Belmar for 15 years.

Among the eatery's most popular dishes are vegan spinoffs of common dishes. For example, their take on buffalo wings is made with tofu or tempeh (cooked and fermented soybeans). Then there are the spare ribs made with seitan (wheat-meat), homemade hummus, the portobello sandwich, and the vegetable jambalaya over rice.

Basatemur, a cultivator of tomatoes, herbs, zucchini, squash and peppers, ensures that 90 percent of vegetables served at Kaya's Kitchen are organically grown.

In business, Basatemur operates under one edict - "Do good and pay the bills." He says, "You get back what you put in (and) you have to choose morals over profits sometimes."
Lasagna Gardening Workshop

Saturday - Oct. 23
10:30am - 12pm
At this workshop you will find out how to build raised beds rich with organic matter and soil biology that naturally stamp out weeds with out any tilling. Lasagna gardening makes use of easy to find, recyclable and natural sources without having to buy lumber or lug around heavy materials. It’s how we build most beds at Kula Farm and by participating, you’ll help us start new beds here and make our community garden grow!
