The CTE Team
Farewell Laura
This academic year at CTE begins with a transition as Laura MacKay, our director at the centre, has accepted the position of Director of Curriculum and Instruction at SFU. In virtually every way, the CTE is a legacy to Laura’s innovations whether we’re talking about alignment with Envision 2030 or navigating the complexities of remote and online teaching during a global pandemic, and everything in between. The newly minted Certificate for Teaching and Learning developed in the CTE is one example of that vision. Those of us fortunate to work with Laura have benefitted from her empathy and genuine care, her vision and passion for teaching and learning, and encyclopedic knowledge of her field. We will miss Laura dearly and wish her great success at her new role.
Starting Your Year off Right
As we return to campus this fall, building community in your classes can help you and your students develop a a positive learning environment and meet the learning outcomes.
New Faculty Orientation, August 23
We encourage all new faculty to attend our New Faculty Orientation on August 23, 8:30 am – 11:30 am in Birch 126. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet and connect with new colleagues and to get acquainted with some of the ins and outs of teaching at CapU. Our goal is to help set faculty up for a successful first year of teaching at Capilano University. Please click on this link to sign up.

Spotlight on: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
A fresh academic term means looking ahead to ways for making your classes effective and engaging. Supporting these ideas is scholarly teaching, defined as strategically making use of research on teaching and learning in order to maximize effective teaching (Potter & Kustra, 2011) through empirical evidence (Kenny et al., 2017, Potter & Kustra).

For a new resource on the subject, read Potter and Kustra's article on the relationship between scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Join CTE for the facilitated workshop series beginning September 14th to further explore how scholarly inquiry can maximize learning in your classes. Click on this link or look for the schedule below, Scholarly Inquiry
Congratulations and Acknowledgements

eLearn
New to CapU? Check your eLearn Dashboard for the Introduction to eLearn site, designed to answer many of your course set up questions.
Looking for help with your gradebook setup? Come to Gradebook Guru, a drop in online support session every second Thursday from 10:30-11:30am starting Sept 1st. Email edtech@capilanou.ca for the Zoom link.
Still have questions? Book some consultation time with our Educational Technology Specialists, Frank Fucile and Mary Watt.

Kaltura
Our video streaming service, Kaltura, recently moved to a new and more stable server. The links to your videos in eLearn should have updated but any Wordpress or other sites using Kaltura links or embeds will need to update their links. To update yours, log in to your My Media account at video.capu.ca, copy the new links to your videos and replace them on your site. If you are using the desktop version of Kaltura Capture, reinstall it on your computer to ensure that the paths are updated.

Turnitin
The mobile app for eLearn doesn’t allow students to accept the terms of the Turnitin agreement when they submit their first assignment. Let your students know that they will need to submit their first assignment via a web browser instead of a mobile eLearn app.

Zoom Integration
Zoom can be integrated into your eLearn course to set up a one time or recurring Zoom session for your class. By adding the Zoom Meeting activity to a course, students and instructors can click on a link in eLearn and enter the course Zoom session.
Follow the steps here to get started.
