Ethel Nagy Gabriel (1921 – 2021) was an American record producer with a four-decade career at RCA Victor. She produced over 2,500 music albums including 15 RIAA Certified Gold Records and hits by Elvis Presley, Perry Como, Henry Mancini, among others.
She was the first female record producer for a major label and the first female A&R producer in the industry. Gabriel produced six Grammy-winning albums.

Leslie Ann Jones (Herbie Hancock, Apocalypse Now, Carlos Santana), has worked in a field long dominated by men, and has participated in many 'firsts'. She was the first woman assistant engineer to be hired at ABC Studios and later at Capitol studios in Los Angeles. She was the first female National Officer of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Jones sits on the advisory board of Women's Audio Mission (WAM) and is a multiple Grammy Award-winning recording engineer working as Director of Music Recording and Scoring at Skywalker Sound. Jones is a past Chair of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Board of Trustees, and in 2018 was inducted into the TEC Awards Hall of Fame. Jones has produced a number of recordings that feature women musicians, from small regional groups like Montclair Women's Big Band. Leslie Ann Jones credits at AllMusic
What are two traits that make Jones a trailblazer in her field?
1. Being open to adapt to whatever situation comes her way

studioexpresso met up with Jones in June who sums up her secret to happiness and success in believing in yourself, always learning and balancing life with work.
SE You have worked in a field dominated by men and have participated in many firsts as a woman. What's your best advice for women entering the music production or audio engineering fields?
LAJ Just be yourself. Don’t go into a situation thinking you have to prove anything or you will be harassed or anything else. We all have to start somewhere. Find a mentor, male or female. Ask questions and show initiative.
SE Aside from your own family of entertainers, which other artists have given you good advice or useful tips and what are they?
LAJ I spent many years as an assistant engineer and learned so much from the engineers, producers, singers and musicians I worked with. I still do.
For me it has been important to have a life in addition to my recording life. We have a tendency to try to say yes to everything and be a 24/7 person. FOMO! Your own life brings perspective to your career. Make sure to have one. Oh, and don’t make plans for Friday nights!
SE What's your best hope for this scholarship?
LAJ Visibility. I knew nothing about Ethel Gabriel until I was asked to participate in a documentary about her life. She was the first female A&R person at a major label. And at that time A&R was responsible for picking material, working with the artists and arrangers but from the label, not as an independent. That is why I created the Scholarship, to honor Ethel and to create more visibility for women who want to get into production, engineering or anything music business related.
SE Any silver lining post Covid? What kept you busy during this time that was rewarding? And what are you looking forward to?
LAJ I know a lot of people in the arts have suffered so much during Covid so it is hard to talk about the different opportunities I have had. But difficult times also bring unintended opportunities and I have had many of those these past 18 months. I think the most rewarding thing for me has been learning new skills that I was somewhat forced into. But also working with some new clients on very meaningful projects.

Orchestral Arranger and Conductor David Hamilton is an accomplished musician known for his versatility, technique and artistic passion. Warner Chappell Announces New Studios in Los Angeles and Nashville
|

With offices and studios in Nashville, London, Paris, Hamburg, and Los Angeles, Warner Chappelle Production Music (WCPM) offers extensive resources to the music world. Since its inception in 2007, WCPM clients include: HBO, ESPN, Porsche, Mercedes, and Lancôme to name a few.
This month they offer the music community two innovative new recording facilities – SkyLight Studios in Los Angeles and Sandtrack Sound in Nashville.
SkyLight Studio (left), located in the heart of Hollywood, California, opened its doors in June. It provides custom music services as well as recording and mixing support for the Warner Chappell Music library. Its staff of 7 includes five-time Grammy Award-winner Ryan Freeland, who joined as house engineer in December, 2020, along with WCPM’s VP of production, Scott Reinwand, a long-term consultant who came onboard full-time in July, 2020 to help oversee West Coast production.
WCPM’s Sandtrack Sound (right) is situated on Nashville’s famed Music Row in the more than 8,200-square-foot building (originally known as Emerald Sound Studio and, later, Benchmark Sound). Built in 1981 by acoustic designer Tom Hidley, it has been home to the creation of many notable releases by Johnny Cash, George Strait, Alabama, Brooks & Dunn, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Olivia Newton-John, and more. Sandtrack features three studios, the largest of which, Studio A, can accommodate over 30 musicians. Studio A upgrades include a custom hybrid Avid S6/Tonelux 1628 console and microphone preamplifiers by Rupert Neve Designs.
SVP of production, Aaron Gant oversees WCPM’s operations in Nashville, and says, “We’re thrilled to be working out of such a historic studio and using it to bring together Music City’s talented songwriters and musicians to record for Warner Chappell Production Music. Our team is extremely excited for the future.” Longtime house engineer Mark Lonsway works alongside Gant to ensure the studio runs smoothly.

WE ARE is a career-defining album from the Julliard graduate, Oscar winner and activist Jon Batiste, imbued with charisma, and optimism. The album title track, We Are, pulls us in with its gospel-like anthem. "This is in our soul. We need that inner peace, you hear me?... Tell The Truth," are in the lyrics. "You just have to wait for the Spirit to tell you what it wants," says Batiste.
WE ARE celebrates Black American culture and music, in general, while exploring themes of love for humanity,
a humble reverence for our past, and hope for the future.
According to Batiste the project began with a six-day recording session, dreamed up, written and organized from his dressing room at The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Guest appearances include: Mavis Staples, Quincy Jones, Zadie Smith, PJ Morton, Trombone Shorty, St Augustine Marching 100, his father, Michael Batiste, grandfather David Gauthier, and so many others.
In pop and hip hop infused I Need You, storytelling meets musicianship with a new Batiste collaboration with songwriter Autumn Rowe and producer Kizzo.
"This song is a vibe cleanse. After 2020, this is like a warm hug," says Batiste. The album was recorded in between sessions for Disney/Pixar's 2020 hit film Soul Other guests include POMO (Anderson.Paak), Ricky Reed (Lizzo), and Jahaan Sweet (Drake, Eminem).
You could say Batiste is the Dylan of our times. His singing and dancing is often upstaged by his beautiful soul, modern arrangements and infectious beats.
And, you don't need to swing or Lindy Hop to get on the dance floor! The upbeat music is juxtaposed craft-fully with more pensive lyrics, offering nothing short of joy.
And now we all get to hear it mixed in Dolby Atmos!
Batiste played himself on the HBO series Treme and appeared in director Spike Lee's Red Hook Summer — most recently, his music was featured in the 2020 Disney/Pixar film Soul. He's been awarded the American Jazz Museum Lifetime Achievement Award, the Harry Chapin ASCAP Humanitarian Award and appeared on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list; Batiste also currently serves as the Music Director of The Atlantic and the Co-Artistic Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem.

"The Fischers have contributed to the soundtracks of arguably the greatest pop star of the 21st century, Prince," says Reid. "Working with Prince has been one of the highest honors of my career," says Brent Fischer.

Composer, arranger, bandleader, bass guitarist and percussionist Brent Fischer is the son of noted composer, arranger, and keyboardist Clare Fischer. Brent made his recording debut with his father's Latin jazz combo, Salsa Picante, at the age of sixteen. He has produced all of his father's albums, starting with Introspectivo. The first two of these released after Clare Fischer's death, ¡Ritmo! and Music for Strings, Percussion and the Rest, each won Grammys.
The Fischers, in fact, have composed musical arrangements for Paul McCartney, Celine Deon, Chaka Khan,Toni Braxton, Raphael Sadiiq, Al Jarreau, Michael Jackson, Usher, The Roots (with Elvis Costello) and D’Angelo, to name a few.

With his sixth album as a leader, Stories, Tom Kennedy shares his musical impressions of captivating tales, bringing along a host of the stellar artists with whom he shares such indelible experiences. Kennedy enlisted lifelong St. Louis friends Dave Weckl and Roger Guth (drums) and Jay Oliver (keyboards), along with some of the brilliant players whose paths he’s crossed along the way: trumpeter Randy Brecker; saxophonists Gary Meek, Bill Evans and Ada Rovatti; percussionist Roger Squitero; guitarist Mike Stern; and violinist Sarina Suno.
Stories, due out June 11, 2021 via Autumn Hill Records, consisting entirely of the bass great’s original compositions. Each piece was written during Kennedy’s travels, serving as an audio scrapbook and providing musical snapshots of tours through Australia, China, Europe and the U.S. while on the road with longtime collaborators like Mike Stern, Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin.

WEA, the Label and Artist Services division of Warner Music Group (WMG), announced in June, that EMP CEO Ernst Trapp (left) has been promoted to President, Global E-Commerce & Retail.
Trapp will be based in Lingen, Germany and report directly to WEA’s President Maria Weaver (right). Since 2013, Trapp has served as CEO of EMP, one of Europe’s leading specialty music and entertainment merchandise e-tailers. In 2018, WMG agreed to acquire the company, with EMP remaining a stand-alone direct-to-fan unit headed by Trapp and CFO Jan Fischer. Under their leadership, the company operates a network of websites serving 18 European countries, with a community of millions of customers, and a fast-growing paid loyalty program. Throughout his career at EMP, Trapp has worked with globally renowned bands such as Twenty One Pilots, Panic! At the Disco, Metallica, Guns n Roses, and Nirvana, as well as major entertainment brands like Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Harry Potter.
Prior to EMP, Trapp held leadership positions in the fields of e-commerce and marketing at Amazon, Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, KPMG, and leading German insurance group, ERGO Group AG. In this role, Trapp will continue to oversee operations at EMP as CEO, while also leading WEA’s global e-commerce efforts, including direct-to-consumer sales and artist webstores. The move will centralize the company’s worldwide e-commerce strategy under Trapp’s remit with teams around the globe working collectively to deliver memorable campaigns for artists and fans.
Additionally, Scott Cherkin moves into the newly created role of SVP, Audience Strategy overseeing WEA’s Global Audience Engagement & Insights.

Alejandro Duque has been named as the next President of Warner Music Latin America. He will join the company in August and take up his new role at the start of October, succeeding Iñigo Zabala, who will continue working with Warner Music as an advisor, after working for Warner Music for more than 30 years. Duque began his career at Universal Music in 2005, initially working in Colombia as a digital and new media manager. He moved to Argentina in 2009, taking up the role of Director of Sales and Business Development.

Maria Weaver (above) is President of WEA, the company’s recorded music division’s global artist and label services network (recently appointed in 2020). Weaver was Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer at Comcast Advertising and previously held senior marketing and creative services posts at Interactive One, HBO, and Showtime. She is based in New York and report to Max Lousada, Global CEO of Recorded Music for WMG.
Weaver oversees the expertise and resources under the WEA umbrella, including streaming account management and playlisting, direct-to-fan and merchandising operations, consumer acquisition, content creation, legal & business affairs, and finance.
Prior to Comcast, Weaver was one of the founders of Interactive One, the digital division of Urban One (formerly Radio One), overseeing marketing and digital ad sales across all of the Interactive One brands. She was also the co-founder of Triple Threat Films, a film fund that financed and executive produced award-winning cinematic projects.
She serves on the boards of She Runs It, The Frederick Douglass Family Initiative, Figure Skating in Harlem, and the International Radio and Television Society.
On Trapp's promotion, Weaver said: “It’s incredibly impressive the e-tailer powerhouse that Ernst has built EMP into, and there’s no one better suited for this role at WEA. The word is the deal is worth around $100 million.

Producer Sean Garrett Inks Global Publishing Agreement
with Warner Chappell Music

Warner Chappell Music traces its history back to 1811. Warner Chappell Music, the global publishing arm of Warner Music Group, has signed a worldwide publishing agreement with creative powerhouse producer Sean Garrett this month. Named "The Pen" by Jay-Z, he has written and produced some of the most popular songs from the past decade, including Usher’s Grammy-nominated “Yeah!,” Ciara’s RIAA 3x platinum-certified single “Goodies,” and Destiny Child’s Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop hit “Solider,” among many others.
Four-Time Grammy-Nominated Sean Garrett got his start in music in the early 2000s performing at talent shows, which led to a recording contract with Ariola/BMG at the age of 17. IDK Announces "No Label Academy" With Harvard University, Boston

Jason Aaron Mills (AKA IDK) bought his high school diploma for $200 and now he's teacing a class at Harvard from August 21-31 2021. IDK and Harvard University have announced a music business program for BIPOC students called “No Label Academy.”
The FREE course is brought to you by the popular rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer via his No Label. Mills' style of rapping has been compared to the early work of Kenrick Lamar.
He says the focus is on building a pipeline for BIPOC talent to kickstart their music careers, "democratizing and reframing what is attainable in the industry,” IDK shared via Instagram. No music or artist experienced is required and the tuition and all expenses will be covered.
“I decided to create this program for the purpose of letting people in the BIPOC community know that a job in the arts is a lot more realistic than what society makes it seem these days,” said Warner Music artist, IDK. Who says "I don't know?"

Nile Rodgers Re-Elected Chairman Of Songwriters Hall Of Fame

Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Nile Rodgers was unanimously re-elected to serve a second 3-year term as Chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame by the SHOF Board of Directors at its annual board meeting held on June 11.
“Nile is tremendously respected and admired by his peers and fans of all generations for being a musical pioneer with his multi/cross-genre music,” said Linda Moran, SHOF President & CEO. Re-elected officers with Moran include CFO and Treasurer Tom Kelly and Senior Vice Presidents David Israelite, Beth Matthews and Mike O’Neill, Secretary Mary Jo Mennella and Deputy Secretary April Anderson. Elected members to the Board of Directors who will serve 3-year terms are SHOF inductees Desmond Child, Steve Dorff and Paul Williams, Hal David Starlight Award Recipient Ne-Yo, Martin Bandier, Caroline Bienstock, Donna Caseine, Samantha Cox, Charlie Feldman, Fletcher Foster, Pete Ganbarg, Randy Grimmett, John Josephson, Jody Klein, Evan Lamberg, Carianne Marshall, Nancy Munoz, Jon Platt, Irwin Z. 2021 Songwriters Hall Of Fame Scholarship Recipients

Recipients of the Abe Olman Scholarship for Excellence in Songwriting are selected by ASCAP, BMI and SESAC from their membership. Abe Olman, for whom this program is named, was both a major figure in the music publishing community and a songwriter himself, in addition to being one of the founders of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Abe Olman Scholarships, given out annually since 1990, have been made possible by his family in the interest of encouraging and supporting the careers of young songwriters. In 2002, one such recipient was John Stephens, whose scholarship funds enabled him to finish his first album which went on to win a GRAMMY under his professional name of John Legend. In 2007 he was presented with the SHOF's coveted Hal David Starlight Award.

The USC Thornton School of Music Scholarship Award is given annually to a student songwriter who demonstrates exceptional professional potential through their art, craft and personal character as determined by the faculty of the Popular Music Program and Division of Contemporary Music. The 2021 recipient is graduating senior Ayoni Thompson.
The Songwriters of Tomorrow Scholarship is awarded to a high school senior attending a New York City public school, demonstrating the talent and desire to learn the craft of songwriting. The student is chosen based on an original song (lyrics and music), and the scholarship will extend an opportunity to pursue a career in music. The 2021 recipient is Isabella Lee.
The Curtis Mayfield Scholarship Award recognizes a promising singer/songwriter whose work reflects the inspiration, spirit and soul of SHOF inductee Curtis Mayfield. Lester London is the recipient for 2021.
The NYU Steinhardt Songwriting Scholar Award is presented to music composition students whose work holds great potential for success in the field, and embodies the art, craft, individuality and qualities of communication of the best songwriting. David Mercado and Julia Shuren are the 2021 NYU Steinhardt Songwriting Scholar awardees.

Sony Music Acquires Alamo Records

Before launching Alamo in 2016, Todd Moscowitz co-founded the independent record label 300 Entertainment and has previously served as CEO of Warner Bros. Records, President of Asylum Records, and held multiple leadership roles for Def Jam Recordings.
Since its founding, Alamo has already brought numerous up-and-coming artists to the forefront, including Blackbear, Lil Durk and Rod Wave.

Sony Music Entertainment (SME) announced in June it has acquired a majority stake in Alamo Records, the New York-based multi-genre label founded by music industry entrepreneur Todd Moscowitz focused on the discovery and development of next-generation talent. Under the terms of the agreement, Alamo, including its existing roster and catalog, will become a new frontline creative center within SME. The Company will continue to sign, develop and market its own roster of artists under the leadership of Moscowitz as CEO.
In making the announcement, Rob Stringer, Chairman, Sony Music Group said, “We are very excited to bring Todd and his label, Alamo, to our company.
