Creating an Inclusive Culture in CoE
Any faculty or staff who have not completed implicit bias training in the last 12 months are encouraged to take or retake the online training by July 1, 2021. To access the training, log in to DrexelOne, click on the "Employee" tab, click on "Career Pathway" under “My Career,” and search in the search bar (top right) for “implicit bias.” You can then click on the online course titled "Recognizing and Mitigating Implicit Bias.”
TEDXDrexelU Odyssey Event
Yury Gogotsi, PhD, Charles T. and Ruth M. Bach Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, will give a talk at a TEDxDrexelU one-day conference on Saturday, June 26. The day’s theme, “Odyssey,” celebrates recent advancements across disciplines, inspiration from stories of triumph, and learnings from new important findings. Professor Gogotsi will discuss recent advances in MXenes. The conference will be held at noon, and
tickets are available online.
CONGRATULATIONS
Adam Fontecchio, PhD, professor of electrical and computer engineering, is the recipient of the 2021 ASEE Benjamin Garver Lamme Award. The award is bestowed upon a distinguished engineering educator for contributions to the art of teaching, contributions to research and technical literature and achievements that contribute to the advancement of the profession of engineering college administration. Professor Fontecchio will be officially recognized at the ASEE annual conference in July.
A partnership between researchers developing novel two-dimensional materials – MXenes – led by Yury Gogotsi, PhD, and exploring their electrochemistry and energy storage applications, led by Patrice Simon at Paul Sabatier University, has won the Faraday Division Horizon Prize from the Royal Society of Chemistry. The prize recognizes significant recent novel discoveries or advances made in the area of physical chemistry.
Ivan Bartoli, PhD, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, is the recipient of a 2-year cooperative agreement from the Federal Highway Administration for a project entitled “Reliable Wireless Sensors to Assess Bridge Safety during Routine and Special.” This project aims to develop, and eventually commercialize, wireless sensors (accelerometers & displacement, strain and tilt sensors) to be used for enhancing routine and special bridge inspections. Inspections are critical to ensure the safe operation of America’s transportation network and the sensors developed with this funding will provide objective information on the performance of bridges. Such information will be critical in prioritizing repairs and maintenance of America’s aging transportation infrastructure.
Arye Rosen, PhD, Academy Professor of Biomedical and Electrical Engineering, was profiled in the IEEE Journal of Microwaves as part of a series on pioneers in the field. The article, “Microwaves in Medicine Was Just my Hobby,” is available to
read online.
Bakhtier Farouk, PhD, J. Harland Billings Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, will serve as a Summer Faculty Fellow at the Federal Aviation Administration Technical Center, Atlantic City, NJ. During his time with the Fire Safety Branch, Dr. Farouk’s technical expertise in the areas of Combustion and Fires, Computational Methods in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer, Convective and Radiative Heat Transfer, and Environmental Flows and Disinfection will be utilized to support various research topics in the Fire Safety Research program, including computational analysis of fire test equipment. The collaborations will build a strong foundation for future collaboration between the Fire Safety Branch at the FAA Technical Center and Drexel University.
