What's New, Who's New

Have you passed by the ASA campus recently? If so, you probably noticed the towering solar structure now shading the courtyard and bandshell! We are excited about the progress we have made to create our new Student Commons and Amphitheater, but we still have a ways to go. While we complete the new seating, hang the lights and sound and expand the bandshell, safety fencing will surround the disrupted area, and students will still have safe passing routes between buildings and shaded lunch areas. Parents will continue to pick up and drop off their students using the familiar pattern (reminders coming soon!). You may also have noticed that the City of Phoenix has made progress with the 3rd Street Improvement Plan - that means fewer lanes for car traffic (read slower traffic movement) plus additional bike lanes and a bus stop across the street. It also means our traffic lights on 3rd and Willetta Streets should be functioning at last!

External changes are not all that are new at ASA this year. We welcome our families back with some familiar faces in new leadership positions. One of our goals last year was building capacity and leadership to create stronger support for our students and our faculty. I am excited to share our new organizational structure and the outstanding individuals who have joined our Senior Leadership Team. Replacing and expanding the roles of our two Vice Principal positions, we now have a Dean of Arts (Monica Sauer Anthony, returning), a Dean of Academics (Emma Popish, formerly 9th Social Studies) and a Dean of Students (Dr. Eva Miles, returning). Eden Lewkowitz (formerly 10th Social Studies) has decided to share his hidden expertise and well known dedication to ASA students and faculty by accepting the role of Operations Director. He has been hard at work since June to lead the campus repairs and improvements. Our student support team, guided by Dr. Miles, includes Veronica Cons (experienced School Social Worker), and Kristi Kleiser, still our 7th grade English Teacher, but also stepping into a new leadership role as Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA). While we have not yet found the right person to step into the important role of ASA Principal, I will fulfill those responsibilities in the interim along with my duties as Head of School/CEO to ensure a smooth transition for our new and expanded leadership team (before 2008 I was the ASA Principal and one of the founding teacher/leaders in 1995). A renewed Principal search will begin in September.

On the first day of school we will have grade-level assemblies to welcome students and introduce the leadership team. We invite families to meet the team and learn what is new at ASA during our first quarterly Parent/Guardian Coffee on September 9th at 7:30am.

I can’t wait to welcome everyone back to school on Tuesday, August 16th. Gates open at 7:15am, class begins at 7:45am.

Expect a Friday Family Email on August 5th with more detailed information about the first days of school.
