As the COVID-19 pandemic moves into its second year, the Hampton Roads COVID-19 Impact Planning Hub continues to provide data and information for the region.

On December 14, Governor Northam announced that the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, in partnership with Charter Communications, was awarded a $21 million Virginia Telecommunications Initiative (VATI) grant to bring universal broadband coverage to the City of Suffolk and Counties of Isle of Wight and Southampton. The grant will provide needed funding to build a high-speed, reliable, and affordable fiber internet network to areas of western Hampton Roads that are currently without service.

HRTPO staff has updated phase cost estimates, expenditures, and schedule information on projects in the FY 2021-2024 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and has produced a snapshot of this data. In addition, staff identifies CMAQ and RSTP projects for which the data indicates progress has stalled. A snapshot of the TIP is produced on a quarterly basis.

As part of the 10th anniversary of askHRgreen.org, the team behind the regional environmental education program is challenging residents of the 757 to tackle new green habits in 2022. Many eco-conscious residents are recycling paper, plastic bottles, and metals cans, keeping grease out of household drains, and choosing tap over bottled water. The Level Up Challenge running now until April, challenges everyone to add at least one new green habit to their daily routine.
