Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

Did you know that at least 1 in 5 Americans will experience a mental health challenge in his/her lifetime? Some causes are homelessness, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), stress due to COVID-19 illness, isolation, loss of family and friends, economic hardship, feeling hopeless (possible suicidal ideation), domestic violence, and bullying.

On August 12, 2021, Cheryl Blount, GWWN Director of Membership, attended a day-long course on mental health first aid, and was certified as a “Mental Health First Aider”. The course was offered by Adventist HealthCare.

Mental Challenge
The course focused on observing/recognizing the patterns of thought, feelings, behaviors, and appearance that show there might be a challenge. “A mental challenge is any disease or condition affecting the brain that influences the way a person thinks, feels, behaves and/or relates to others, and to his or her surroundings.” (Mental Health First Aid Adult Manual, National Council for Behavioral Heath). The course did not teach how to diagnose disorders, nor diagnose oneself or others.

What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid is help for a person experiencing a mental health challenge, mental disorder, or mental health crisis. During the course, we learned risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, and strategies for how to help someone in crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help.

Who Should Attend?
The course was open to pastors, ministry leaders, churches, and community members.

Research Alert: Why Women in Biz Are Using Fake Male Assistants

A recently revealed trend of female entrepreneurs using fake male assistants demonstrates how gender norms play out in business communication.

One way they have found helps their work is by having a fake male assistant who handles certain tasks.

Mom's Viewpoint
Turning Back the Hands of Time
In the old days, there were mothers, grandparents, aunts and uncle who were moms but not always biologically. Children were trained and not raised. These Moms genuinely cared for other children and adults in the community. They observed children’s behaviors and had the liberty to give corrections. Good manners and moral values were practiced and that was the norm and expectations. You mind your manners and it began at home! These Moms nurtured, loved and demonstrated knowledge and wisdom to resolve problems and looked for solutions. Education and learning were gifts. This newsletter's wealth of information would have been distributed as an investment and educational tools for empowerment to help others grow.

Moms encouraged children to use their abilities to make a better life for themselves and make a difference to humanity. Children's achievements were honored. Moms knew being well-behaved and exercising proper manners led to successes and civility. During that era, respect, peace, harmony, dignity, and cooperation were some of the components that united our culture and society.

As a society, we are no longer "united" but "divided". These priceless gifts have fallen by the wayside, and we have lost a legacy. We do not want to turn back the hands of time for everything, however some things are necessities. As we inhale and exhale and look back at the community Moms, they are missed.

Now, let’s take another look at "MOM" from another perspective, We all can take responsibilities to "MIND OUR MANNERS" (MOM). If all of us adopt the same goal with the same mindset to embrace MOM, "united we stand" as one powerful nation! Can we accept the challenge refreshing and renewing, what we know about MOM from both viewpoints? We can teach the children well and they will lead the way. They are our future.

GWWN has included some "MOM" guidance. In addition to what we already are doing, there is room to become even greater super "MOM". Are you ready to speak MOM's universal language?

Here are 15 manners designed for kids but also applies to adults; we are MOM.
  1. Say please, thank you, and you are welcome.
  2. Have a positive attitude.
  3. Gestures to greet visitors are different now due to the pandemic; however, show some "kind" responses. Even wearing a mask, a warm smile is felt and appreciated. When the virus is over, greet visitors with a hand shake, eye contact, and a smile.
  4. Say proper goodbyes.
  5. Offer to serve people who enter your home and to help others.
  6. Say excuse me when it is necessary to interrupt a conversation or if you bump into someone.
  7. Exercise respectful phone and electronics manners. Do not use electronic devices at the dinner table and when engaging in verbal conversations.
  8. Practice good table manners when eating.
  9. Send thank you notes.
  10. Wash your hands before meals.
  11. Give compliments to others.
  12. Knock on doors before entering a room.
  13. Share.
  14. Hold doors open for others
  15. Offer genuine apology as needed.

A Little Manners Poem

Wait your turn—don’t interrupt.
If you use it, pick it up.
When you need some help, say Please.” Be kind and loving—never tease.
Say “Hi” when meeting someone new, and be a friend whose words are true.
If you win a game, don’t gloat.
To thank someone, write a note.
Don’t be piggy when you eat.
And clean your space, so it looks neat. These manners are the perfect start, to showing friends you have a heart!
Manners Call and Response Poem

We say, "Thank you."
We say, "Please,"
And "excuse me," When we sneeze.
That's the way
We do what's right.
We have manners.
We're polite.
