Fall 2022 Book Study:

Help for Billy: A Beyond Consequences Approach to Helping Challenging Students in the Classroom

This book study is limited to 25 participants. Each participant will receive a free copy of the book for the book study. The book will need to be picked up at the ESCLEW security desk between 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. The address is 2275 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo, OH 43620. Books can be picked up starting Monday, August 22. 



Overview: The goal of this book study is to provide educators with the tools necessary to explore how childhood trauma impacts childre both short-term and long-term and therefore affects their behavior at school. Through questions and activities, participants will be challenged to examine and collaborate with others about a new approach for working with children with a history of trauma. We will explore the importance of looking beyond punitive consequences to deal with misbehavior and will instead focus on the power of connections and relationships.  


Facilitator: Elizabeth Kregel, Ph.D. 

Elizabeth is a former teacher and school administrator who now works as a family liaison at the ESC of Lake Erie West and is a foster and adoptive parent who has vast experience working with kids who have experienced trauma. 


Date: The book study will start Tuesday, September 6 and will end Friday, October 28.


Time: This book study is asynchronous with two optional Zoom meetings on Thursday, September 22 and Thursday, October 13 from 3:30-4:30pm. The Zoom links will be sent to registered participants.


Location: Virtual. A Google Classroom will be used for collaboration. Information about access will be emailed to registered participants. The Zoom links for the optional meetings will be emailed as well.

Contact Hours: Each registrant will receive a certificate with 12 contact hours after completion of the book study
