The Path to Resilience for Prevention Professionals

 Friday, July 8th 9:30am-11:00am
presented by Cathey Brown

As prevention specialists we are committed to the emotional, mental and behavioral health of the children and youth we serve. We are aware of the importance of helping them become more resilient and ensuring protective factors are in place for their wellbeing.

BUT what about us? What protective factors are in place to help us become more resilient in the stressed filled, demand laden world we live in? We know self-care is important, but it can sometimes feel like just another “to do” list, stressing us out, or just suggestions on how to “pull ourselves up by the bootstraps” more effectively!

In a guided, self-reflective format, we will begin by acknowledging our current realities of competing personal, family, and vocational priorities in a world environment in which we have little control; moving quickly to focusing on the paths we can take toward enhancing or putting in place protective factors and building upon our own resilience.

It's All Connected

 Friday, July 15th 9:30am-11:00am
presented by Cathey Brown

As children many of us learned the song “Dem Dry Bones.” Lyrically we were taught the connections of our skeletal structure. Many of us still remember these connections today! Our marvelous bodies are also connected in many other ways, one area often impacting how well the others function. Additionally, we have interpersonal connections to families, communities, social groups, co-workers, faith communities, etc.

Daily we witness how national and world events are connected. One of the significant losses of the COVID pandemic were the repercussions of disconnections. Still adjusting to the ever-changing COVID realities, we are also experiencing (directly or indirectly) how connected local, national and international events are: stalled supply chains; inflation; mass shootings; soaring gas prices; political discord; international tensions and wars, etc. When depression, anxiety, and stress are escalating, and we need meaningful connections. We continue to experience disconnections. Educators are dedicated to being part of the solution and helping their students. but may find themselves stuck in a cycle of stress inducing circumstances over which they have little to no control. Where do we even begin?

Mindset Matters

Friday, July 22nd 9:30am-11:00am
presented by Krystal Skaggs

Have you ever thought about the difference between a “growth mindset” and a “fixed mindset”? What do they really mean? Where do they come from? Are we born with them? There is a significant difference between students with a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset. In this workshop, we will explore the difference between them. We will also consider the implications they have on successful learning and the ability to change and grow while we delve into a variety of strategies.
