October Dinner
Special Guest Speaker
Ken Richardson
Wednesday, October 7th
No Host Bar starts at 6:00 p.m.,
Dinner starts at 7.p.m.

D. Kenneth Richardson, raised in Hawaii, earned three university degrees in engineering and business administration.

Richardson fulfilled his childhood dream in 1952, when he joined Hughes Aircraft Company, based in Culver City, as a radar design engineer. Howard Hughes had created the eponymous company during the Great Depression, as a subsidiary of Hughes Tool Company. But after the billionaire crashed his experimental spy plane in Beverly Hills (near the Los Angeles Country Club) and nearly died in 1946, he became a recluse. Hughes withdrew from day-to-day operations, and ownership of the company was transferred to a foundation that supported medical research.

The aura of its maverick founder, Richardson says, permeated the company. "We made sure that, whatever we were doing, we were going to do it better than it had ever been done before," he says. "We didn't feel constrained by any procedural ground-rules-we broke barriers-and we operated with integrity, technically as well as business-wise. Finally, we didn't tell anybody what we were doing because they will steal your ideas."

Although he began at Hughes Aircraft Company as a radar design engineer,  in forty years of service, Ken rose to the position of President and Chief Operating Officer, working with a team of more than 80,000 employees creating products in every field of advanced electronics technologies.

No a lot has ever been written about Hughes Aircraft as the majority of work they have done was classified, so much so, that many engineers rarely told their spouses about their work other than, "It's classified."  Now's your chance to get a  insight into  one of the world's most successful corporations in the aviation industry. We are fortunate to have Mr Richardson as guest speaker for the October dinner.  We are even more fortunate to enjoy his friendship with the museum over the years.

He will speak about "Hughes After Howard: The Story of Hughes Aircraft Company," the title of a book he published in 2011. Signed copies of the book are available in the museum gift shop.

Legacy for Success, a Winner!

One of the special presentations done this past month at the museum, was an evening event held for select business leaders and other influential people in the Paso Robles area.  It was an opportunity to show the community a bit of "behind the scenes" work that has been happening at the museum.  It was a chance to share with many of the local civic leaders one of the best kept secrets within the community.  And boy, were they impressed!
Guests line up for dinner

A very special thanks to board member Michael Levine for not only recommending the event, but also coordinating and with the help of nearly 30 great volunteers, direct activities in the background to insure the evening was a tremendous success.View more pictures and info of the event  click here

EAA B-17 Aluminum Overcast outshines at Estrella Warbird Museum

On September 28th, the EAA B-17 Aluminum Overcast, pulled onto the tarmac at Estrella Warbird Museum for a full day visit.  On a day we are normally closed (a Monday), we had nearly 100 visitors whom paid admission to the museum and most took a tour of the B-17.  The WWII aircraft was visiting Paso Robles for a few days and was hosted by EAA in conjunction with Estrella Warbird Museum.

Special thanks to all the volunteers who manned the phones and served as docents on Monday plus the Toni Moore and the crew that set up on Tuesday at the Paso Robles Airport as they sold souvenirs and shared information about the museum to the visitors that came to take a tour of the aircraft or to take a flight of a lifetime onboard the B-17! What? Even More New Stuff???

If you've not visited the museum in the past two months, you are missing out on a lot of great new displays in Freedom Hall and a whole slew of new vehicles in the Woodland Auto Display.
It's not a Panther, but it is the latest BMW at the Woodland Display Building

We all remember the pictures of the terrific restoration job done on the RF-8.  I know some of you are wishing you could have an opportunity to help restore an old aircraft.  We have another old "rust-bucket" which has started an extreme plane makeover and you can take part - even if you've never done it before.  We've started on an F-9F Panther which has been soaking up rays out in the boneyard and is in desperate need of some tender loving restoration.  Now's the time to learn.  Stop by and introduce yourself.  It's time to make some new friends!
